No, if you go for summer, you are in for Fall too. Many kids do the summer session. Many do it just to get acclimated at the school (not because of a conditional acceptance). It is a great way to start college at a huge school.
Bamboozle, you really should consider it. You get to knock off two classes (and thus have an easier workload in Fall and Spring) and also get to know the campus before "the masses" show up.

Seician, do you get to pick the two courses to further faciliate the "soft landing or soft takeoff"

I would definitely coach the summer student to take one hard and one easy class. Many kids take English comp and some sort of Freshman Experience class or an elective.

I applied for summer so I could learn my way around and stuff before school really really started. I wouldn't mind spending my summer in college taking courses and having alittle fun anyway. I want to learn my way around before everyone else comes and crowds anything. Besides I'm eager to start school :-)

I also applied/ got admitted to summer, not by force but by choice and Im happy about it, so when fall comes around I wont consider myself a freshman, and will know my way around and the tricks of the trade.
