Nah Victor, youre cool. Everyone reads these differently. This whole entire forum is to let everyone know who appied for what and who received what....dont sweat it. Congrats!

IF ur a URM who received the award, can you please post ur school stats?

i don't think asians are necessarily URM though.

yeah it true, kind of suck being "discriminate" against just because you an over achiever. But I think GMS do a very good job selecting their scholar and I dont think they have racial preference (except if you white, then that just plain bite)

What are the criteria for receiving the award besides financial need?

Being a great student and someone who writes good essays (there are A LOT of essays) are probably the best qualifications other than FA; I suggest u start te essays long before the deadline. They only read the essays, transcripts, recommendations, SAT scores, etc to select people. Some GM scholars are going to highly competitive schools such as Harvard, Princeton, Northwestern, MIT, Stanford, Cornell, etc etc

correction to Lunknot. GMS doesn't need SAT, or any standardize test for that matter. They follow the heresay that SAT discriminate against minority.

well, they asked for SAT scores on the application....I think. In any case, I know my scores were sent to them because they were sent w/ my transcript.

The GMS is a minority (esp disadvantaged because of pell grant requirement) scholarship...so it doesnt matter

not necessarily a URM minority because asians get it too.
SAT doesn't really matter.
The essays and the recs are reaaaaaaaally important.

they didnt ask or see SATs.

I got a 19 on my ACTs last spring, i was freaked. Then i got a 960 on the entire SAT and everyone told me, wow, are you going to college? I am a perfect example that standardized tests don't matter, since I got over $200,000 in scholarships on a maxed out level. I am a Gates millenium Scholar! If there's any one out there who worked your tail off with A.P courses and tough grades and do many things, and write great esays, you too may get the Gates Millenium Scholarship.
Javier, Arizona

well I know i am a little but I got my paper also. how do we get our log on info for the website, and has anyone heard anything about the leadership conference

I dont have my paper with me and Im working out of state this summer, so I just called the Gates Millenium 1-800 # (on www.gmsp.org) and asked them for my username. Your password is just the word "password", then tafter you first login, they will ask you to change it. So, just give them a call and youre good to go. And about the conference, once you get on to the website, you can print out a scholars guide that somewhere talks about that - I think if your anywhere from the mid-west onto west, they fly you to LA Calif. and if your east, you go somewhere on the east coast (Im not to sure) but, the location that they put you in depends on the location of your college, not your current home address. Hope that was helpful!

I am a senior, well soon to be senior, in high school. When would the competition start for the 2006 school year.

go to the website posted above click on 2005-2006 nomination materials and they will send you an email when it starts

when's the conference?

If my parents are making $45,000 per year but has assets in excess of $300,000 (common stocks), do you think I will be pell eligible for the Gates Scholarship? I hope the pell is only cocerned about the annual income of my parents rather than the financial assets that my parents has..

i don't think you'd qualify

$300,000???? yea, i dont see it(Gates) happening, sorry

hey guys I havent been on here for a while but have run into a prob with gates (Well not gates directly) but my school reduced my academic scholarship by half from 4250 to about 2190 (and other fin aid sources)..and when I called my fin aid office they told me they took away some aid cause of gates...so ok i emailed one of the reps (Monica Valadez I think was her name) and she told me i was going to have to wait until september..but then I sent another email and got an email from Cathy Makunga, the gates scholarship director telling me to send an updated fin aid award letter. So I did...but i have not received word from gates if they will be able to do anything in time before school starts. Any advice???

Thanks,
