GE courses for BS?

Do you need to take General Education courses if you’re going to get a BS?

I think so. For my major I need to take an English and a Communication course.

You have to take GE classes no matter what major you are and what you took in high school. Unless you went to community college, but they’re still sticklers about that and might still make you take some classes.

There’s 5 types of GEs every student has to fulfill: Science and Engineering, Social Sciences, Diversity, Writing, and Arts and Humanities. There’s talks about adding an Oral Presentation GE too. That might seem like a lot of unnecessary classes you have to take, but there are classes that fulfill up to three GEs at one time (we call the double/triple dip classes). Also, if you are getting a Bachelor’s of Science, most of your classes are probably under Science and Engineering… so you don’t really have to worry about fulfilling those.

There are some annoying classes that only fulfill one GE or another. So you should pay attention to the course catelog when signing up for classes. Some people take all their GEs early on, while others take their major requirements first and save GEs till the end. Some major requirements fulfill GE requirements too. There’s really no right or wrong strategy to taking GEs besides choosing the easiest ones, not the interesting ones.
