Gen Ed Requirements

Hey there so I'm a freshman at SMC, and an Acting Major. Currently I'm trying to pick classes for my second semester. I have most of them down the only problem is, is that I'm going to be taking Astronomy 1, Japanese 1, Jewish History, and a Singing class for my major.

I was also going to take Acting 2 which is also for my major but since all the available time slots conflict with my other classes, I can't take it.

My problem is I met with my counselor today and she said it is imperative for me to take English 2 to get priority transfer consideration. But I'm only a freshman and I've gotten finished with English 1 and will finish Stats in the Winter and I've heard stories that as long as you apply to the Scholar's program the Universities will let you finish up English 2 in your last semesters and that finishing it early doesn't make a difference. Is this true?? Because my counselor told me it isn't and only those that finish it in the first year get priority!!

It's just I really want to put it off seeing as how I have too many classes already for the Spring and if I had to take an extra class I would much rather it be Creative Writing which is my second major.

By the way, is 16 units too much for the Spring.....

Please answer if taking English 2 early makes a difference and what I should do.

Help me please…

You need to finish that English class… make that a priority!! You will not be able to transfer with only 1 English class… you have to have two. It doesn’t matter when you take it, as long as you take it by the end of Spring 2011. It WILL NOT make a difference if you take it Winter 2011 or Spring 2011, as long as you take it. If you are on the semester system you NEED to take it next semester or you will not be able to transfer!!

Thanks very much, but what if I want to transfer 2.5 or 3 years from now, then do I still need to take English 2 in the Spring.

No, just make sure you take it the spring before transfer. It doesn’t hurt to have such a vital class done by fall before transfer so they can see the grade
