General studies at TAMU

Hi I've sorta posted the same thing in a previous thread but thought it'd be better just to create a new one all together. So I've got admitted into Texas A&M but I am being admitted to General Studies and not Petroleum Engineering which was my major of choice. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about General Studies? Maybe someone can fill me in about exactly how it works and what kind of classes are taken. Perhaps my major concern is whether I can still pursue engineering and how long do I have to be in GS before I can change major. Would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks in advance.

ok so i am not one hundred percent sure but i think you change at the beginning of your sophomore year. you will be taking general classes that will count towards any major. and you can still get into your major if you want to change just make sure that your counselor knows that you want to change at your new student conference and you should be fine! congrats on your acceptance. see you next year hopefully
GIG 'EM!

most colleges do this…

you will take general classes and classes that are required for your major…you’re just not officially affiliated with your major of choice…

talk to your advisors and see how to get into the major you want and what courses to take :D

You can switch. Just do well in your freshman year classes, and if I remember correctly you can look on the engineering website and it will tell you minimum requirements to transfer into the major you want. For most, it is like a 2.85 or something.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I just have one more question. That is, if I will be doing one year of general studies, will that mean delay my graduation by one year?

no you shouldnt be delayed b/c afaik (not a tamu student) you should be able to take your liberal arts electives and basic ENGR TRACK courses even while on general studies
