I have been accepted to both Binghamton and Geneseo, and I like both schools. I am vying towards choosing Geneseo, but I am having trouble getting over its lack of name recognition. I am not even concerned about random people not knowing about Geneseo; I am more worried about future employment prospects, particularly if I decide to relocate to another part of the country or internationally. Would Geneseo's seeming lack of name recognition be an issue if I relocate outside of New York? Is Binghamton honestly better known?

Both are well known in the world of academia but SUNY overall in many ways lacks name recognition because they do not identify flagship campuses. Many would say that Binghamton is the flagship University and Geneseo the flagship honors college. However, remember, there are tons of very competitive schools that most people do not recognize as “great schools” because they are not an ivy or a big ra, ra college sports school. I do not think you need to worry about future job prospects with either school because name alone does not get you a job. Taking full advantage of all of the opportunities that either of these schools can offer you through internships, volunteer work, student leadership positions, exchange programs etc. will set you apart and make you more marketable. Both schools are very different so I would just attend the school you feel is a good fit for you. For me, it was Geneseo for others it is Binghamton.

If you are planning to stay in NY for grad school or your first job out of school, then it doesn’t really matter.

Geneseo and Binghamton are very different. Geneseo is in the middle of nowhere and Binghamton is less rural.

It also depends on what you want to major in. Binghamton is known for business, Geneseo has an education department. You need to think about what you want to study, how you want to live, what type of clubs, activities, living arrangements, etc. there are.

Yes, Binghamton is better known to the world at large. This is due to a variety of factors: Binghamton has more alums; Binghamton is a university vs. a primarily undergrad school at Geneseo; Binghamton has been a featured “great buy” in education for what seems like decades; Binghamton is closer to the NYC metro area by a couple of hours; etc., etc.

Could attending either school put you at a disadvantage if you were to seek employment out of state after graduation? In most cases I don’t think this should be a concern as SUNY grads have been migrating in large numbers to the Sun Belt since the 1970s. (Charlotte is just Buffalo without the snow). Could attending Geneseo or Binghamton put you at a disadvantage if you were competing for a job in Austin against a UT grad? Probably. But it’s often the case that regional firms will give precedence to grads from top regional colleges and universities.

In any case, I don’t believe that the possibility that you might seek employment out of state after graduation should deter you from considering one of the elite SUNYs.
