george washington honor scholarship

I'm a finalist! I'm really excited to see the campus. I haven't been able to visit Washington and Lee, so this is perfect. Just FYI, my letter was postmarked January 24.

Anyone know about engineering at WLU?

I'm a finalist, too! I definitely wasn't expecting this because my scholarship essay was mediocre at best. However, I am definitely looking forward to visiting the campus and meeting the other finalists! I really wasn't considering W&L seriously before this notification, so I'd say the admissions office is pretty smart in doing this for RD applicants.

If you're an GWHS finalist, your essay was far better than mediocre, congratulations! See you on campus!

Haha, thanks for the compliment Dima. What year are you at W&L?

I'm a freshman - so I may just end up hosting you. Unless you are a girl or from Alabama - I asked for no one from Alabama (no offense, I just can't understand the accent ;) )

Or my roomie may end up hosting you, we plan on squeezing two Honors Scholars into this room (don't worry, there is plenty of space)

LOL, don't fret, I'm NOT from Alabama...but I am a girl. Guess you won't be hosting me! hahaha

My son is from Alabama and in spite of his accent he received a GWHS scholarship two years ago. I imagine he will be hosting students again this year.

Hahaha, I wasn't trying to say anything mean about Alabama. I just had an Alabama host last year and we were so different that it was just really strange so I jokingly asked not to host anyone from 'Bama. I actually made a couple of good friends from Alabama at Honors Scholars last year - unfortunately, neither ended up coming to W&L.

BTW, only freshmen host.

Hey y'all--

This is pretty minor and not something you should be worried about, but if any girls out there have questions about what kinds of clothes or anything else to bring for the competition let me know. I am a freshman at W&L this year and am an honor scholar and I remember being kinda stressed about what to expect at the competition last year. Let me know if there's any way I can help at all and get excited for February 28! My roommate and I are each hosting one of y'all, and we're really psyched to meet you :-)

D will be there and, yes, I wondered what would be appropriate (depending on the weather, too). I'm more concerned about getting a sleeping bag & pillow from Texas to Virginia! Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I'll let Elissa answer the clothes questions for the girls - all I'm going to say is don't forget to bring nice interview clothes as well as something to wear to the classes you will be sitting in on and other stuff you will be doing. You'll probably also need hsower supplies and sleeping supplies (that sleeping bag and pillow) but I recommend waiting until next week when your daughter finds out who her host is. She should then give her a call and talk about it. I was luck last year - my host had an inflatable mattress so all I needed to bring was a sleeping bag.

Good luck and see all the finalists in a few weeks!

Dima - I've been reading your posts for several weeks now. You are a world of information in one body. (Oh wait, here I go assuming you only have one!)

Tegan29, please do inform on clothing appropriate for girls! Will there be any social events for the finalists?

You'll have 3 interviews, but two of them are back to back so I recommend 2 business professional outfits for those. Most girls wore skirt suits last year, but we had an impromptu blizzard and I basically froze. Weather in Lexington is really unpredictable so I recommend bringing a coat, even if the weather forecast says we'll have nice temperatures. For class, sweaters and jeans are fine. You should get your host's email address before you come and I strongly recommend emailing them. Most of us here have sleeping bags and then y'all won't have to worry about bringing them. I got lucky last year because my host had a double and no roommate, so I got a bed. They're aren't really a lot of social events except luncheons with current honor scholars, and those are really low key. We'll be running in and out because we have classes, etc. so you don't really have to worry about dressing up. Y'all will be here in the 4 days preceding Fancy Dress (our huge annual ball-- it's supposed to be amazing), so I'm not sure what kinds of social activities you'll be going to. It depends a lot on who your host is. Hope this helps! Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Impromptu blizzard? The blizzard was about two days before we arrived on campus and the weather while we were in Lex last year was high 30's and low 40's, quite mild actually (though maybe not by Texas standards). While Lexington weather has been really wild and varied this year, so far it has followed forecasts so just check the weather forecast a few days in advance.

Finalists have two interviews back-to-back on Wed evening either following or followed by dinner at a restaurant in town and another interview on thursday morning so appropriate dress should be packed. I don't see why the same outfit can't be worn for both Wed eve and Thurs morn interviews, since they're with completely different people and it will help to lighten luggage to bring only one pair of dress clothes but that could be a fashion faux pas - I'm not exactly an expert on dress.

As for soical events, some finalists choose to go out to parties on Wed night, others don't. It is not part of the competition but I would actually recommend it, I think it's important for finalists to see al aspects of W&L - including party life. So that might be a consideration to pack as well - just don't ask me what to bring for that, Elissa would definitely know better than me.

PS: I suggest packing light - for airline travel in general and because hosts have only so much space in their rooms.

Wow, are there actual parties between Tuesday and Thursday?

There are parties on Wed night, they are smaller and more sparsely attended than Friday and Saturday night parties and there are almost never any bands or DJ's hired for them.

Sounds sweet! I can't wait.

Oh?

yes . . . though by soical I mean social and by al I mean all - I don't know why my typing was so off on that one
