george washington honor scholarship

97 students

Weren't 100 invited? What's with the 3 kids who didn't accept the invitation? ED admits somewhere else?

2:3 guy/girl ratio

And for Dima, if we listed a sport as one of our activities, do we watch a practice or meet with the team or what?

First off - yes a few people did drop - unfortunately the one I was supposed to host is one of them :(

What can I say - girls are quite smart, I think we had a ratio like that last year.

As for sports, Thursday morning you meet with the coach.

I know all of us here are excited for you guys to get here and are ready to show you all around and make sure you have a good time.
See you soon!

Dima...how sad!

Wowww, I can't wait to meet all of the finalists tomorrow! When are you all arriving in Lexington?

Best of luck to all the GW scholars - have a great visit to Lexington.

When do finalists hear?

Last year we got ours on March 26th (just look back a few pages on the forum ;) )

How many of the ~100 finalists will receive full tuition + room and board?

im guessing 10-20 but honestly its just a guess - if i can i will find out for you on tuesday

I am surprised that no one has commented on what they thought of the scholarship competition. Did you like the campus? The people? Will you go there next year? I, for one, enjoyed most of it. The campus was gorgeous and the town was so cute. (Though I can imagine that it would get boring fast.) The people were amazingly friendly and the honor code really works. I found myself leaving stuff lying around after just two days there. The whole party scene worried me when I first came, but I was surprised at how responsible the students were even when they were partying. I never felt unsafe or anything. As for going there, we'll see how much money I get. But, whatever happens, it was great meeting all of you. Best of luck to everyone wherever they choose to go.
Sorry for rambling on!

Oh! I almost forgot! For those of you who are W and L students: How was fancy dress? It sounded like it was going to be awesome. I was quite envious.

Fancy Dress was absolutely amazing! Both the band and DJ were great and the decorations were insane (the best $85,000 will get you I guess) - it was like prom except about 100 times better. And the best part is that next year should be even better - the 100th anniversary will mean an insane budget and the greatest fd ever.

kilo33, I was also a Honors Scholar finalist at W&L...and I absolutely LOVED my experience! Frankly, I traveled to Lexington thinking that I would hate the school...homogenous student population, Lexington (small, boring town), conservative political slant, etc. My perception changed drastically as I arrived, however. The students there are probably the friendliest people I have ever met. While trying to find my scheduled classes, I got lost twice and was directed to the correct places by two Seniors. One of the seniors even asked if I wanted to join in on her broadcast journalism class. Also, I didn't think the Honor Code would be that big of a deal. On the very first day in the Dining Hall, I felt comfortable enough to leave all of my belongings (including my purse) at the foot of the steps. The classes were also astounding. I visited Disease Ecology and Developmental Psychology classes, which were both very interesting. In addition, I had the opportunity of viewing a physiology lab in the Biology department. This was probably the most interesting...the professor and her students were stretching frog cardiac muscle out from a dead frog, observing changes in cardiac activity as the muscle became longer and thus, tighter. The teacher's explanation was extremely clear and to the point. I have had the misfortune of having ridiculously incompetent teachers at my large, public high school so this was definitely a welcome change. I was also very pleased with how the school welcomed the Honors Scholars. I had attended a similar function (though, not a scholarship competition) at another liberal arts college and my experience actually underwhelmed me and caused me NOT to apply to that school. All of the admissions counselors were so friendly and willing to answer any questions the finalists had. In addition, the students welcomed us into their lives by taking us to the various parties on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I, personally, did not go to a party on Tuesday but know that some finalists chose to do so. Basically, I was really happy with my visit there...and yes, it all comes down to how much money I get. W&L is unfortunately quite expensive, and I'm not sure if my parents will pay a significant amount of money for me to stay in-state.

Oh yeah, Dima, could you find out about how many get tuition+room+board? Just curious to know...that would probably be the only way I could afford W&L...

First off, would you guys mind identifying yourselves? I know a met a bunch of you guys during honors scholars and some of you even ended up at my frat and I would like to match faces with sn's, if possible.

Secondly, W&L is on average $8-12,000 cheaper in terms of total cost than comparable liberal arts colleges as well as major universities. I know that other than public schools, W&L was by far the cheapest school I looked at. I will do my best to find out the numbers for you this week as to how many get which scholarships.

Grace, about 40 of you will receive full scholarships.

First, does W&L pay you to monitor this site and provide official info?

Second, do you know if financial need plays any part in the decision of how much to give each scholarship finalist? Or is it all merit?

TheGFG,

The George Washington Honor Scholarships are based solely on merit.

GFG,

I wish I got paid for all the time I kill on here! I am not a college counselor or admissions rep, those who are on CC have special designation - I am just a student. Therefore NOTHING I say is in any way official. All my information is gleaned from three sources:
a) my experience with the admissions process last year as well as with the school this year
b) my general knowledge of admissions from books and from the adcoms who I talk to fairly often
c) as in the situation where I was asked about the number of full scholarships, sometimes I just ask the adcoms on behalf of you guys and get the answer for you all

Again, I am just a student on this website when taking a break from my studies (or when I get writers block in the middle of a paper on Marx such as now), please do not count anything I say as official in any way, I speak solely of my knowledge and my experience.

There was some debate on this last year and I think what we figured out, though I could be wrong, is that who gets full scholarships or half-scholarships is based solely on merit but that in some ways the level of scholarship (full tuition vs. full tuition, room and board, vs. full tuition, room, board and expenses, etc) may be influenced by financial need.

EDIT: So since I don't get paid, if any of you find my info particularly helpful and want to send me cake or something, I can PM you my address . . . ;) jk
