Georgetown 2023 Applicants Discussion

@Samsmom2019 That sounds excellent. Everything about Georgetown seems excellent actually. How easy is it to get an internship at the white house from Georgetown?

@SafalM To be honest I’m not sure. I was in the Business School and didn’t know anyone who did that kind of internship. I did an independent internship my summer before Senior year that I organized on my own, so I don’t have a lot of experience with that aspect of the school. I would imagine a lot would depend on the overall availability of WH internships in general and the connections the SFS office has with the WH. I would be pretty sure that being able to do that kind of internship full-year-round would be a big plus for GU students over people from other schools outside DC who would only be available in the summer months.

Good luck guys! I am Georgetown class of 2022 just submit my deposit to go to Georgetown, so if you have any questions about applying I may be able to help!

@SafalM The White House internship is a full-time internship, so students tend to do it in the summer since they can’t take classes and do the internship at the same time. It’s an extremely competitive program, but the GU Politics institute does have connections to both current and former internship directors, who actually came to campus earlier last week to talk about the WH internship.

@masquerade98 That makes sense, thank you for clarifying that! I wish my school had people from different universities coming to talk to us haha. We have one from Stanford but she is only here because someone from our school got into Stanford last year so…

@Savage101 How do you get through the stress of college applications and waiting for college decisions?

I love international relations, but how can I better express my passion in my application? I have MUN and I’m a U.S. Senate Page this summer.

@Samsmom2019 Thanks for offering to answer questions. I also plan to apply to SFS with a concentration in Arabic and I have a few questions (1) SFS is my top choice, but if I don’t get in to SFS, I would also like to be considered for admissions to the College as an econ - Arabic double major. Is that possible or do you have to apply to one or the other (SFS vs. CAS)? (2) does your son take Arabic in high school and is he doing any supplementary study in the language prior to applying? I am a native English speaker but started taking Arabic freshman year. (3) Any advice for someone like me who is not a legacy? My GPA is strong and I have a 35 ACT. I will be taking subject tests in June. Thanks again.

@RFM1617 (1) Not sure, to be honest. Back when I applied in 1988/9, on a typewriter!, we had to pick one school to apply to – for me that was the Business school. I didn’t minor in anything but I was able to take classes in any school I wanted. I actually ended up taking a lot of Eastern European and Russian history classes and loved them. I’m not sure what the double-majoring across schools policy is – perhaps more recent grads or current students could weigh in? (2) My son actually does not take Arabic in high school, as it is not offered, unfortunately. He is in French 4H right now and is planning to take AP French next year. He is learning Arabic independently through a work colleague of my husband’s, whom he skypes with. He also did the Arabic FSLA program at University of North Georgia last summer and loved it. Unfortunately last year was THE last year of the program, which we didn’t find out about until we saw that they did not put another application online this year. He’s going with CIEE to Morocco this summer and hoping to get some college credit through their program with Tulane. (3) Show your passion for the school as much as you can, that you want GU to be your home for the next 4 years, and especially during the alumni interview. I can’t speak for other school’s alum interviewers, but I know GU alums do it because they love the school and want to give something back from the 4 (or 8) years they spent there. Your ACT score sounds amazing, so I think you have a great chance! Good luck and I hope this helps!

@Samsmom2019 Thanks for the great information. There is a lot of good information on QFI’s website including a virtual exchange language program. Your son might want to check it out. Here is a link, if CC will allow it https://www.qfi.org/programs/youth-engagement/virtual-exchange/

@RFM1617 You apply to one school and are only considered for that school. There’s no second choice option. That being said, you can transfer if you get in the College and want to go to the SFS, for example.

@masquerade98 Thanks. That’s what I was afraid of. My first choice is SFS, but it seems like it is harder to get in so I will have to consider whether I would be more likely be admitted to the College as an Econ major and Arabic/Middle East Studies double major or minor. I know Gtown publishes its stats for admitted students, so I will look at that and see where I seem to fit. Thanks again.

@RFM1617 Yeah, it really depends on where you think you’d fit better. Transferring is not unheard-of but it is difficult to do. Also keep in mind the difference between the College and the SFS is +/- 1% acceptance, and part of it has to do with the college getting more applicants.

Oh hey, I noticed we starting talking about different schools (College vs SFS). What about the NHS? I’d love to hear more about it.

I’m applying 2019! It’s my absolute dream school. I plan on applying Bio or something Health Science related. My school does GPA on a 100 point scale so unweighted it’s a 100 and weighted it’s a 103.7. My test scores aren’t super high (1450 SAT) but I plan on improving. I have done TONS of volunteer work though and am insanely involved outside of school. However I highly doubt I will get in

@gtlover123 me too! Hopefully I’ll see you around!

@SafalM

The best way to get tbrough college app stress is just to relax and know that you will be fine wherever you end up. It’s a good idea to have a few safety schools that you like, so in the back of your mind you know that "Even if I don’t get into (reach school), I can still go to _____ (Safety) that I like.

I also recommend not procrastinating on your essays

Does anyone know whether GT College or Health Science Studies is harder to get into? I’m debating which one to apply to.

@RFM1617 Thanks for the info! I will definitely be sending them an email to see if they do any one-on-one programs or enquire into how to start one at his high school!

NHS

Hey all. I’ll also be applying to GU, hopefully for the SFS. Current weighted GPA is a 4.17 that should be 4.2 by the end of the semester, with a 31 ACT. I’m still waiting on my second set of scores from the test I took on April 24th. Has been my first choice since sophomore year, so hopefully with early action I can do my best to make it happen! Still not keeping my hopes up, though. Good luck!
