Georgetown is my first choice right now, but I’m afraid that I won’t be able to afford it ;( my unweighted gpa is 4.0 and my wgpa is 4.318. My ACT is a 34. I’m looking to apply to MSB to major in finance!
The topic of transferring on this thread is a bit old, but for future CC stalkers hoping for the big G…
Transferring between schools at Georgetown isn’t hard at all. I’m a rising sophomore who thought and asked about it for a bit, and basically as long as you’re not bombing your classes, they won’t give you too much flack. It’s almost solely based on your grades, and if you’re in the top 50% of the class for GPA, it’s pretty much guaranteed you can transfer from any one school to another, and lower is usually fine too. They understand you’re still young and it’s unrealistic to expect you’ll have it all figured out by the time you’re a freshman in college. They just make it seem hard because it complicates things if everyone thought it was no biggie at all to transfer and thus did so, as logistically that would create issues, so they try to keep it contained- thus the GPA requirement. The thing is, most kids find their path without ever transferring, which is definitely what the administration gently encourages lol and generally the ones that do want to transfer end up doing so without issue.
Just apply to whatever school you feel is best, and don’t worry if your interests change. As long as you’re not slacking, you’ll be fine :). And hopefully you’re not slacking, you’re future Hoyas! Reading this thread makes me so proud of our glorious university and it’s posterity, let me tell you. I wouldn’t worry, you know you’re destined for a school like Georgetown if you’re type-A enough to be involved in an applicant thread this far ahead of schedule!
Regardless, I wish you nothing but the best, and may the odds be ever in your favor as you navigate through this twisted game we call 21st century college admissions! I remember being in your shoes, and do not envy you in the slightest- but don’t worry, it gets so much better.
Of course feel free to PM me with any questions, and HOYA SAXA you bunch of party people!
@RFM1617 ^^
@jack233, thanks … your post was really helpful
Hey everyone. Not sure if this chat is dead yet but I’ll post anyway. I’m not trying to make this a chance me thread, I’m just wondering if I should waste my time and application fee. Still in love with the school and it’s my top choice, but after taking the ACT a second time my scores went down to a 30 and my superscore is still a 31. Is it even possible to get into the school with a 31 when every year they are having record breaking applications and lower acceptance rates? @jack233 if you have any insight on this I would greatly appreciate it. I know I shouldn’t keep my hopes up anyways with these selective schools but it’s hard not to wish for what might be the impossible.
@mkb679 Given that I know nothing about you or your application, I would only say that you miss all the shots you don’t take. Also, I know plenty of kids who made up for lower test scores with other things. These top schools aren’t looking for robots with perfect test scores- and getting below Georgetown’s average on one standardized test in high school doesn’t say much about your potential for future success as an individual. Also, a 30/31 isn’t in “bad” territory for any school. It just means the standardized test section won’t really count in your favor, it’s absolutely not a ding.
“What an amazing application! They did this and this and this and- oh wait. Only got a 30 on the ACT. Well we could obviously never take them, perhaps they meant to apply to Georgetown Community College. Next!” I guarantee you that is not something that will happen.
If you’re in love with it, in my opinion, you should absolutely go for it
Hi I am the mother of a rising sophomore at Georgetown and just wanted to confirm that Georgetown is an amazing place. My daughter chose it over Dartmouth and hasn’t looked back. She loves DC and is really motivated by the business school.
Everything that @jack233 said is so true…you can transfer between colleges and I think the admission rates between the 4 colleges are all almost identical…like within a percentage point.
I think scores are important and I don’t think they superscore. So if you can retake tests (if you need to) that would help. With that said, I do think they truly look at more than just scores and are more holistic than some other schools, especially for SFS where they might be truly looking for some kind of genuine interest in that kind of education.
Good luck! My daughter could not be happier with her choice!!
One more point…I give Georgetown credit for holding onto their unique application. If they added ED, went common ap and got rid of the 3 subject tests recommendation. they would be a single digit acceptance rate school. I will not blame them if at some point they have to cave in and join common ap, but they really try to weed out applicants that aren’t truly interested in the school. Many other schools are doing the exact opposite are doing whatever they can to increase application numbers to appear to be more selective. Adding ED I, ED II, and EA, becoming test optional or easing up on testing requirements…Georgetown doesn’t play that game.
^ I too give huge credit to Georgetown for the reasons mentioned above!!
So for all the folks applying to SFS, what’re you guys thinking about for your policy essays?
If I have good enough grades and extracurriculars, do you think a 1360 on the SAT and a 31 on the ACT will bring me down too far? I know everyone says it’s a holistic process, but GU places a lot of emphasis on scores.

@seasyde I agree with you. Having worked with high school seniors for many years, including applicants from some outstanding private schools, it is my impression that Georgetown attaches considerably more attention to test scores than many other top-tier schools, including many Ivies. At other colleges, I’ve encouraged students to go ahead and apply if they have less than stellar scores but other factors in their favor. At Georgetown, that does not seem to be the case. That’s not a criticism but just something to be aware of.
@seasyde I would give it a shot anyway. There are some people with those scores that get in. It is a reach but you should go for it!!! You never know. What school are you applying to?
Sent in my initial application, working on my supplemental essays right now. I’m not giving away my writing topic but I feel that writing about current issues that aren’t super common could work in your favor for the policy essay. For example, pretty much everybody and their mother knows about the relationship other countries have with North Korea. There isn’t much people could learn from an essay on it they didn’t already know or hear new perspectives they haven’t already heard. If you find a topic that you’re passionate about and could bring something new to the table with, I think that will stick out much more than “Trump did this” or “North Korea is doing this”
Hey guys, I’m a little confused on the Test Score Report section. I heard you have to report all scores to Georgetown so I sent scores through CollegeBoard and ACT. However, I can only report the month and year for 6 tests, which I have 8 to report. Somebody help me???
I would just do your best six or your most recent six. They will figure it out when they get the actual score reports.
Do you definitely still have to report ALL scores? I know that used to be the case, but I feel like every year things change. To their credit, Georgetown has really held on to their strict requirements at a time when it must be tempting to lighten up, but I would just double check to make sure they still want everything. I know U Penn dropped that requirement a few years ago.
Hello All,
Currently, I am a senior in high school and I have already applied to Georgetown’s SFS. I visited the campus in July and I absolutely fell in love with the school. Alongside GU, I have also been accepted to Bowling Green State University and the University of Akron and I plan on also applying to American University, George Washington University, William and Mary and Ohio State University.
In terms of testing, I have scored a 1350 on the SAT (680 in English, 670 in Math) and a 31 composite/32 superscore ACT score (35 English, 34 Reading, 30 Science, 27 Math (lol)), I plan on also taking Math I, Literature and US History Subject Tests in October. My unweighted GPA is a 3.95 and my weighted is a 4.712, earning me the position of valedictorian; as the course offerings were limited and not enriching (both honors and AP), I opted to enroll in Kent State University for an alternate high school experience throughout my junior and senior year. Here, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA while doing normal high school activities.
Throughout high school, I have been a varsity letter winning soccer player for four years and I am currently a senior captain. I have won league awards as well as student athlete awards and also complete an annual community service project with my team. I was a cheerleader for the first three years of high school (not really my thing) and also won student athlete awards. I am a deejay at my school’s radio station (88.9 The Alternation) and have held positions as the Director of Fun and have also won staff member of the summer. My real pride comes through the theater, however; since my freshman year, I have sang, danced, and acted in several shows as characters like Tiger Lily and Moana. As the theater troupe is also a nonprofit, we do team with local organizations that promote the independence for people with special needs. While other things like National Honors Society and earning the Citizenship award are nice points, talking about theater is really what makes me happy.
I also have about 100+ hours of community service under my belt by helping organize and oversee a service week for middle school students at my grandma’s church, volunteering at a local after school care center and running things like soccer camps for local youth and collecting cans for our local food pantry. Currently, I am working on organizing and directing a christmas play for my brother’s first grade class
I wanted to reach out on this forum because attending Georgetown is my dream and I am very interested in meeting people just like me. I know my test scores are not the most impressive - which does worry me a bit - but I feel in my heart of hearts that this is the university for me. Good luck to the rest of you guys applying!
@fvalverd congratulations to you on all of your accomplishments! You certainly have an amazing background!
My daughter is at Georgetown (just started her sophomore year) and she loves it so much. I hope that you will be there with her next year! She was also valedictorian.
Your being valedictorian could be a big boost to your application. Georgetown actually breaks down acceptance rates by valedictorian somewhere in their stats and definitely having that distinction will strengthen your odds of admission.
As you already seem to be well aware, your scores are a bit low relative to other applicants. Sounds like you are planning to take subject tests, as well. I think the best thing you can do to strengthen your application (in addition to maintaining your grades) is to score as high as possible on the subject tests and to consider retaking the SAT or ACT. You might not have all of your scores in by the 11/1 deadline for EA, but if you are deferred and your scores go up, that can only help. SFS is the hardest college to get in there, but they are all hard and have similar acceptance rates.
Essays are also very important, as I’m sure you are well aware.
For what it’s worth, Dartmouth also likes valedictorians. Very different than Georgetown, but it’s a great place, too.
Good luck! You should be very proud of yourself for all that you have accommplished!
Hi,
I’m a senior applying EA this fall. I’ve submitted the first part of the application (creating your account) and was wondering when I’d find out details about the interview. Has anyone heard from Georgetown about the interview process or know when we will?
