Georgetown Class of 2027 Official Thread

I completely hear you! I was in the same boat with Brown and dedicated so much time to the university and son ended up with a rejection. Your son has amazing options!!!

Where in Colorado!? Son was accepted to Gtown and we live in the mountains near Beaver Creek

In 2022, Georgetown waitlisted 3,277 students and 2,453 accepted a place on the waitlist. Of those, 29 eventually got off the waitlist.

Anyone familiar with the campus? Is it a safe campus? I assumed so since it is in a nice neighborhood.

It is safe for sure. The surrounding neighborhood is expensive, historic, compact brownstones - parking is impossible (think Boston Beacon Hill for similar vibe). Also walkable down to shopping district on M Street.

My daughter is currently a senior there and while the campus is safe, there are a lot of sketchy people hanging out around M Street and Key Bridge. People who are clearly lost on drugs and quite a few homeless people. There are large groups of kids walking around at all hours, and campus police cruises around all the surrounding streets because a lot of kids live right off campus. She has called a Georgetown security escort to walk her home occasionally after studying late in the library - which is a great service they offer.

Thanks!!!

Thanks! Good to know more about the specifics.

Recent history I believe is nearly 50% yield. I imagine it increases slightly every year. The schools try their best to predict yield and any movement from the waitlist represents any slight departure (overestimation) of predicted yield from actual yield.

Did anyone else receive a “personalized” letter from the school president mentioning what stood out in their application? My son’s highlighted something he’s never been interested in.

I received it too, but I actually was interest in what they said

I live about 1 1/2 miles from the campus. It is often on my daily walk. It is in a pretty nice area of DC. My daughter is trying to decide between G’town and UCLA and I would feel safer with her at G’town.

Yes - but the highlight is something our child participated heavily in

Same here!! Strange.

Does anyone here know about the clubs and activities on campus? My daughter spoke with a friend that goes there who indicated that the clubs can be competitive to become a member and most require a financial contribution much like a fraternity/sorority would.

As I understand it, there are a number of “pre professional” type clubs that are competitive to get into, but most of the activities are open to all comers. The student needs to be proactive, particularly if there are known interests where they can jump the club day early in the fall. Most first year students seem to find their way pretty quickly into a variety of activities.

I had similar concerns and found these articles on club competitiveness/costs in the student newspaper helpful:

Most clubs on campus require essays and interviews to join (even serving at the coffee shop). As a result clubs are selective and often exclusive. (My D is at GT). I haven’t heard of any clubs requiring fees, although their events can be expensive.

According to my sophomore, the competitiveness and exclusivity of club culture has not gotten better, unfortunately. Even in MSB, where they seem so important, she decided just to steer clear of it. Also said many require tests to make sure you are staying up with the club. There’s enough pressure without that nonsense.
