Reflection
[ list]
[] Strengths: SAT I scores, GPA, class rank
[
] Weaknesses: College-specific essay
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred:[/li][/list] I applied to be a government major in one of the most prestigious universities for government in the country, so competition is always tough and not every qualified candidate can get in EA. Overall, my application may have been too generic, nothing that really stands out. My college-specific essay didn’t help in this regard.

General Comments:
While I’m disappointed of course, I remain hopeful for RD. HUGE congrats to everyone who got in EA- you truly deserved it. I heard this year’s EA was among the most competitive ever. To any future applicant, my biggest piece of advice: MAKE YOURSELF STAND OUT. Everyone who applies has stellar grades and test scores. Focus on what makes you different… Praying for good news come April!

School Applied To: NHS

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 670 CR, 650 M, 700 WR (2030) retook in Dec 2015 idk score yet (The last straw)
ACT: N/A
SAT II: 670 Bio E 700 Math 1 (sent all the scores I previously got)
Unweighted GPA (4.0 scale): 3.41 (pretty long story…had a hard time studying in a competitive school/county (HoCo, MD) So I didn’t perform to the best of my abilities. Big regrets on not being able to realize that I needed to balance out hard classes with easier ones (pressure to take the most AP’s was big)
Weighted GPA (5.0 scale): 4.23
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):Top 30%
AP (place score in parenthesis): Bio, Calc 1, WHAP, Psych, Gov, Eng 11, Spanish, Stats, English 12, Enviro I took most of the AP tests, but I’m not going to write down the scores.
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP English 12, Spanish 5 AP, Stats AP, Enviro AP, Anatomy, Tech Ed (required course), Orchestra GT
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): All State Orch, Presidential volunteer service award, ap scholar award some others that are not huge.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):TED-Ed Club President (making our own TED conference next year) VP Multicultural Club, Hospital shadowing at Johns Hopkins (beyond eyeopening dream med school!), Korean School Assistant Teacher, Research Projects (2) on Ecology (microbeads), and pediatric cancer, multiple orchestras (school, county, and state) Relay for Life NHS Tri M Spanish NHS, NSLC at Northwestern, church orchestra (youngest member), morning announcer, track and swimming (9th-10th)
Job/Work Experience: N/A not paid for Korean School, but we do get monetary “gifts” on major holidays.
Volunteer/Community service: every Friday at Korean School over 100 hours spent at KS, Orchestra gigs
Summer Activities: Hospital shadowing, research project, did some Edx
Essays: Wrote about improving a students score at Korean School (I like that one), I think my essays were personal and representative of me. Another essay was about creating a bracelet for cancer patients, and the last one was about med…I think the med one was banal so I’m going to rewrite it. Won’t rate because the grade differs with every reader.
Teacher Recommendation: Loved my WHAP and Bio teachers, I was a good student, but I don’t know what they wrote. I loved both of them though.
Counselor Rec: Wasn’t extremely close with her, but she was very nice! Had some run-in’s with her due to trying to switch out of courses.
Additional Rec: WHAP teacher, really quirky guy. I had a great time in WHAP joking with him. Def don’t think it was bad, positive feelings!
Interview: Best part of this application. Talked for almost two hours, it was amazing. I was going back at forth between GWU and GT (due to some cocky GT student I met before), but my interviewer really drew me into GT. Words cannot describe how amazing he was.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Human Science with a possible minor in music or psychology.
State (if domestic applicant): MD
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Extremely competitive public school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Income Bracket: I don’t know…parents make enough to support me, my brother, and my dog lol
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Mom came to America for grad school only and left US, Dad went to college here and ended up staying in America. Dad’s store got absolutely destroyed and robbed during the Baltimore riots (losses of 600,000+), and we just moved into a new single home so I had no clue how we were going to support ourselves. Thankfully my mom did an amazing job keeping the situation under control, but this was the last few months of junior year so I was stressed about money, stressed about my family, stressed about school! Didn’t mention this to gtown though.

I probs didn’t get in because of my grades (I got two C’s…it’s a long story…again…won’t explain in detail) but this failure I did in high school has really motivated me to try a thousand times more in college. I am capable, and I will not let myself down in college. Too many regrets in hs that I refuse to feel again in college.

BUMMED OUT! mom hugged me and I cried it out lol…I’m such a crybaby…but I ain’t giving up! I never felt a place more comfortable than Georgetown. Did really well this quarter (3.85, 4.5 something gpa) so glad to see I am improving, but if I get flat out rejected, I will probably consider transferring freshmen year of college. But Gtown doesn’t mean I’ll become a doctor…so my decision in April won’t kill me. Good luck to those who were deferred, and a big congratulations to those accepted. You guys already are so talented and spunky.

accepted to MSB with 2080 so don’t worry to those looking at this thread and getting anxious!

    [
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 2015 Siemens Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Honor

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Competitive year-round swimming. I train 30 hours a week and three times in the morning before school. Needless to say it takes up most of my free time and leaves room for little else. I’m hoping to swim at Georgetown, too, been talking to the coach. Captain on my HS team. VP of my town’s youth council. Some speech and debate. And a YMCA youth government program
[
] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service: Community Reading Buddies (10) helped underprivileged kids learn how to read
[
] Summer Activities: More swimming haha. Research internship at UCLA Biology (10) and UC Berkeley Materials science (12), this is where I did my research for Siemens.
[] Essays: Overall I thought they were solid. One was also my Common App essay, and I talked about how swimming had changed my life for the better. It was more unique than your typical sports essay and I tried to emphasize that. I also talked about my research in another essay, and for Why Georgetown I talked about my passion for the sciences and elaborated on the engineering program that Gtown does with Columbia.
[
] Teacher Recommendation: pretty subjective category, but I thought they were pretty good. One from APUSH and one from APES. Nothing outstanding here. Didn’t have too personal of relations with them so it actually might’ve hurt me. 7/10
[] Counselor Rec: Probably super generic…I got a new counselor this year and it really ticked me off. But oh well. N/A
[
] Additional Rec: One from my swim coach. Outstanding. 10/10. I read it, and I’ve known him for four years and he spoke highly of me in the light of humility and character.
[li] Interview: I thought it was pretty average. We spoke for only about 40 minutes and it was a good talk, but I froze up when she asked me if there was anything I’d like to say that isn’t on my app. So beware, any RD applicants who are doing interviews![/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Solid grades, and test scores, I actually worked my butt off for the SAT. Brought it from a 1600 originally to a 2350. Hard work pays off. Being so involved in research and being a Siemens Semifinalist was definitely awesome. I think it’s good to have a few strong passions and go in-depth on those, than a bunch of superficial EC’s.
[
] Weaknesses: Teacher LOR’s were probably average at best, my race
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: Listed above in strengths. Super happy! I hear back from MIT tomorrow which I’m super nervous about, it’s always a slaughterfest with their admissions. Congrats to everyone![/li][/ul]
