HI all! Now seems like the perfect time to get a discussion going about admissions. I’m sure many of you are as anxious as I am. I’m applying as a junior transfer to the SFS (considering changing it to Georgetown College as a Government major). I’m interested to hear from you all, what are your intended areas of study or backgrounds/stats? And from any transfer students at the University, any advice is welcome.

Do I have a shot at gov’t major?
I would argue that you have a strong chance, especially since you have a solid high school record, I’m retaking the ACT to help my chances but I’m not sure how much it can do. Best of luck to you!

Hello everyone,
I am a transfer applicant from a two-year college in Texas. Wanted to share my stats.
Junior
McDonough
Major in Accounting
GPA: 4.0
Hours: 60
Highschool: Horrible GPA and dropout. I have been out of high school for nine years. I am a returning adult to college.
Activities: Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Officer, New student orientation leader and campus tour guide, local political campaign volunteer, 2017 Global citizenship alliance; Salzburg Austria, student delegate, active member of international club and student government association, high school mentor, and I work on campus (my current college) in the Service Learning department.
My LOR is from my accounting professor. I took both honors financial and managerial accounting with her.
I am a bit worried because I am a high school dropout. I had to dropout of school to work to help my family. I also took a long period of time in the workforce before I went back to school. I hope this doesn’t hinder my application. The high school transcript requirement worries me a bit.
Hey all, just signed in after a year or two to wish you good luck - I was in this same position last year and ended up staying at my university despite acceptance. I applied last year and hadn’t actually done much during university, but they still accepted me haha.
I would say before anything really plan to stay at your own university and figure out how to make your time at your existing institution more enjoyable. A lot of the programs you see at other universities could probably be at your own university if you put in some work. If you’re wondering if you have a shot: of course you have a shot. It may even be very good. The best advice would be to refrain from being neurotic and have fun where you are.
Well, I am a transfer student from community college. I have no choice. I have to transfer some where :)) Joking aside, helpful advise to those considering transferring from another uni!
Michigan State University: Freshman
GPA: 3.81 @16 credits
EC: Quiz Bowl team, Tutoring Refugees, Speaker building team, food service job.
Major: Political Philosophy major, Arabic double major or minor.
HS GPA: 3.85
SAT: 1260 new (Should I retake it? I’m confident that I could do much better now.)
EC: Head Drum Major of Marching band, Hillsdale College dual enrollment, Jazz band soloist, Freshman mentor program Vice president, Business professionals of America secretary and regional finalist, 3 year varsity captain of quiz bowl team, State honors band, chorale and symphonic band.
Also, I spent a summer at Georgetown University for a JSA program, where I met a lot of political figures and took A.P Gov from a Georgetown prof, so I have personal experience with the University in some ways.
I’m planning on having a 4.0 this semester, and I hope to apply to Georgetown next year, as well as the University of Michigan.
Essay prompt says include your reason for transferring. Are you guys incorporating this into your essay or making it a separate portion?
@TerrierNation Always answer the prompt.
I guess now that the GU application deadline has passed, I was wondering how people feel about their application?
Personally this was my first time ever applying for college, and I feel that pretty good considering my gap year experience/involvement, and my success at my current school.
Here are my stats:
School: Freshman at Mesa College, a community college in southern California
GPA: 4.0, part of the Honors program
Major: Econ/Philosophy double major, applying as Econ (applying to the College)
EC: Associated Students, Senator; Business Club, President; Honors Club, Director of Honors Opportunities; Intern at a sports-marketing company; Phi Theta Kappa; a lead on organizing a TEDx on campus
High School GPA: 3.4
SAT: 1400/1600
Have not applied to Georgetown in the past.
Other:
- Attended a vocational school in Oklahoma for a year (Spartan College of Aeronautics) - this experience I consider the equivalent of a “gap” year.
- High school: Had a condition called Fibromyalgia, parents divorced, finished my high school diploma online
In my GU application I wrote about my personal growth living in Oklahoma, how I want to challenge how we view wealth, being a minimalist, and gave specifics on how Georgetown is a great fit for me. On the section that asked for any special talents/skill, I made sure to add some quirks/humor: I can hold my breathe for a loooong time (4+ minutes), very personable despite being super introverted, I can do the worm, knowing all the country capitals =)
Letters of recommendation were probably 8.5/10.
Does anyone know if you they will still accept an updated resume if I send it to them? Or another recommendation letter, even though the online deadlines have past?
I applied to Econ. Best of luck everyone! Anyone know when last year’s transfers found out?
@yiskers I would say it is very possible they will take late letters or updated resume since they have extended the deadline a bit for late applicants. I would definitely call and ask! It’s worth a shot! Good luck on your application, you sound like a great candidate!
@msport From last years thread, it seems that people were finding out the first week of May. Some even got their financial awards in April… so they knew then they had been accepted. lol
I read through the 2012 Fall Georgetown transfer thread and it seems like it was a regular thing to send materials in late - with no consequence to their chances of being admitted.
Super excited to hear back, I feel like I have already won for some reason. Even if I don’t get in.
@TexasRosé_
Good luck to you! We have similar stats and the same HS situation and returning student status. Fingers crossed for the both of us
Hey, just wondering what you think my chances are for MSB as Finance Major

Stats?
I probably would not be considered the traditional candidate. I moved to the United States from China when I was 17 and am now a naturalized citizen. I’ve been in the professional workforce for nearly 7 years.
I worked for the state government as an accountant previously and currently am an accounting associate for a non-profit in DC.
Applying to the business school to finish my degree in Accounting/Finance.
Since I’m 26, my high school years don’t matter quite as much as it was so many years ago. But my GPA from previous college courses is a 3.7.
Really focused my application on the combination of my global background and accouting experience and how Georgetown is ideal for me as I pursue a career in public service.
