***Georgia Tech Class of 2021 EA Applicant Thread***

@TryntoFigureOut sorry to hear–she sounds like an excellent student. My son is also seemingly fine with this and has moved on. I need to do the same.

According to this press release, http://www.news.gatech.edu/2017/01/14/4380-students-welcomed-tech-early-action, 21% of admitted candidates were out of state and 49% were in state.

@indy101 From China. Got in.

Hey, I’m pretty new on here but I also applied to GA tech and was deferred (aerospace engineering). So far also deferred MIT, only accepted Embry-Riddle. OOS, white female, 4.16 uw, 2350, NMSF, etc, etc. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to further demonstrate my interest, short of visiting the school (impossible due to funds/distance). I was considering emailing/ calling the admissions office but I don’t want to back them up any more than they already are? sigh.

Additionally, I applied EA for scholarship consideration - if I do get accepted in regular money will likely be an issue (80k ish bracket w/debt), so of course I’m applying for more outside scholarships now. Just wondering, though, there is no chance that I will receive anything beyond need-based from tech?

I don’t want to bum anyone out, I’m just kind of disappointed and questioning my application choices: probably should’ve gone in-state or full ride somewhere. I didn’t really get help from anyone except a couple teachers and a friend who’s really good at writing and I feel like my essays weren’t the best since this was the first school I applied to.

One more question. I assume colleges keep track of student interest. I’ve been getting info from gtech on my personal email since like 8th grade but I used my school email instead. Would this have any effect (even minimally) on my application for whatever school, since I gave my other email to collegeboard initially?

Eh well. Better luck next round? Cheers to everyone who got in!

@aerosEsq Georgia Tech is known for not giving good financial aid to OOS even in the EA rounds. Did you run the net price calculator for the school (and all your colleges) before you applied? If not, do it now. If GT is like it has been in the past, you will see that need-based finanical aid for OOS is mainly just loans. There are some exceptions for students who are from bordering states like Tennessee or Florida. As far as merit, I do not believe you are eligible for the Stamps/Presidential Scholarship since you have to be accepted in the EA rounds. You might still be eligible for merit through the Provost Scholarship. There may be some financial aid from some of the scholarships listed on the finanical aid website page, but again they will not be huge awards.

As far as improving your chances, I suggest you email your regional admission rep for GT and in a succient email update them on any new info, activities or awards and state why you want to attend Georgia Tech and what you hope to contribute if you attended. GT likes students who will contribute beyond the classroom so reread the admission blog by Rick Clark (Tech’s admission director) as well an an interview he gave for this book. http://collegeadmissionbook.com/blog/rick-clark-director-admission-georgia-institute-technology

I have seen several Posts saying GT admitted by major this year. We attended a full day campus tour in the fall and were specially told this is not part of their admission process. I am wondering how such a dramatic change in admission process occurred.

@Sdsfromaug I believe this is just speculation

@SinsOfAdmission – I want to correct your comment above.

21% off OOS applicants were admitted and 49% of in-state applicants were admitted, but that does not mean that 21% of the applicants admitted were OOS residents.

This article posted by someone else yesterday is clearer.

http://getschooled.blog.myajc.com/2017/01/14/georgia-tech-sees-record-high-applicants-31400-today-it-admits-first-round-in-early-action/

Out of the nearly 16,000 early action applicants, slightly more than a quarter of them — 4,200 — were Georgians. Of that number, Tech admitted just under half.

75 percent of early action applications came from outside the state

So, 49% of 4200 in-state applicants were admitted. I do not know if OOS also includes international or simply other US states.

Did everyone who got in recieve an email? I was accepted but have not gotten one, while I have seen posts saying they got an email with information.

Based on the stats some people that applied as CS majors (and other super competitive majors) are posting that were not admitted, I have to believe that they took intended major in to consideration. There are some students with nearly perfect scores and ranks (valedictorians!) that were not admitted. Similarly, I know of an OOS prospective business major that I thought was for sure going to be denied based on the stats people were posting, and she was deferred. Yes, there is more to being admitted than grades and scores, but these top students seem to have the whole package. I hope they all do well during the RD round, and if not admitted to GT in the end, I’m sure they will end up at great schools.

Thanks, @CT1417. So what are your extrapolated percentages as a result?

@SinsOfAdmission – I didn’t bother trying to calculate b/c I didn’t know how internationals were considered and how much of an impact they have.

I did! From Jamaica!

My son (OOS) was admitted directly to his major - electrical engineering. Thrilled! He wants CS too so will pursue that. Congrats to all those who got in & so sorry for those deferred or rejected. Seems it was rather competitive EA - especially for OOS.

@mathnerd3 how do you know your essay ratings?

I’m a little late, but was deferred. Quite surprised, 33 ACT, 3.9 GPA, female from PA. Tons of ECs and leadership… will not be attending but I was still pretty shocked by the result.
