Georgia Tech Class of 2025 -- Regular Decision

I get the Atlanta city vibe is not for everyone as it is in the middle of Midtown Atlanta and is very urban. We thought Rice was lovely though and the museum district of Houston has a lot of charm. Same with Austin. Felt like a college town instead of a city. Your son has great options!

We have never been to Atlanta but will find out next month

My daughter goes to UT and LOVES it!!

Advice to Friend #2, I wouldn’t stake a college decision based on the number of friends going there. College is about so much more than that and exploring new things, making new friends and new connections. It may be a little uncomfortable at first, but that’s what life is about. My identical twins who had never been apart from each other and even in our high school pretty much had everything together since the track they were on didn’t have many sections for them to be separated, went to different schools (the one at UT and the other elsewhere) and it really caused them to each thrive. They also each went OOS and that was totally new for my 2 introverts. They’ve made so many new friends, found their people and are loving everything about school and their programs. You also cannot beat in state tuition for UT so I get the money consideration for that person.

As for your son, so funny he doesn’t want that city vibe, although Austin at least it’s outside of the campus. I don’t know anything about Rice and I can understand that at GT. Some of the Ivies will have the same thing, just depends which ones he’s waiting on. But regardless, the cold at the Ivies also can be an issue. If he ends up in the cold, all you really need is a good coat, boots, hat and gloves. You do not need long underwear, lol. Many will tell you that, but no you don’t. I always laugh seeing people telling kids that coming here (Chicago) to U-Chicago or Northwestern, but definitely not, unless you may be going skiing for a day.

Good luck to him (and the friends)!

My ex husband went to Emory and I always loved Atlanta. When he did his residency, I would have gone there in a heartbeat since it was going to be 5 years in some random city. Just my luck they didn’t have the residency he wanted and we instead got stuck in Iowa for 5 years! Best health care ever, but other than that…it’s a NEVER AGAIN! lol

Can anyone still access the admission lite data? Looks like they locked it.

Which would be better Georgiatech CS vs UIUC CS?

The schools aren’t similar. You need to do more research. GT is a duke, nw, rice category school. Illinois is a Purdue, Wisconsin, Minnesota category school.

I suggest some YouTube student “day in a life of CS” for each school.

Here’s a couple:
GT - YouTube
Illinois Day in the life of a freshman at UIUC #1 - YouTube

Georgia Tech’s website says that we might not receive financial aid info until mid-April!! How is it fair that they are accepting housing deposits to hold your place in line for dorm selection, without notifying people of their finanacial aid. Seems unfair to those who want to commit, but have to wait to see if they can afford it. ??

They’ve always done it that way. At this point there’s very little difference in available dorms so you are fine waiting till after you receive your financial aid to decide. It is a pretty significant payment to reserve your dorm spot so I would definitely wait. The most competitive dorms are Glenn and Towers on East campus and they will likely be full of people who committed in December. They always go first. My son was admitted EA two years ago and deposited a week later. He got the last male room in Towers. They go super fast. Everything else is pretty equal.

I have also wondered if they do it that way as a soft indicator for yield. Unlike many schools who have a negligible deposit to get in the housing line , you have to feel fairly confident of your decision to risk 800.00 or whatever it is. You do get some of it back but if you cance after March 1 it goes down every month.

Thank you for posting Mid-April date for FinAid. My son keeps checking OSCAR but no updates have been posted. He was admitted RD after a deferral.

Did anyone apply to the honor program learning community? Trying to decide if S21 should.
Thanks!

Wow, that is really late!

Not sure I agree with your groupings - GT is an ACC school with Division 1 sports and robust Greek life - very dissimilar to the 3 you grouped with it and quite a bit larger. Also UCIC has an incredible CS program - ranked higher than GT.

Biggest difference will be urban school vs more rural.

Agree with your assessment that GT shouldn’t be compared to Duke, NU, or Rice. Not even close. Unless he’s referring to size.

But for CS - UIUC and GT are tied along with U-Wash, Cornell, Cal Tech and Princeton (which suddenly moved way up in the rankings). All totally different types of schools, locations, types of campuses, sizes, etc.

Has anyone received an acceptance packet yet from GT?

nope.

Received Georgia Tech email to say Financial Aid Award are available via OSCAR, but tried to access it and it says it’s not available yet.

Was able to access it shortly after.

DS was very excited to get accepted to GT and it is currently one of his top, if not the top choice, but on the Parents GT Facebook thread there has been an ongoing discussion that many, if not most, of the CS and Math courses for Fall 2021 will be online. This has been based on the students that began registering for classes on 3/29. Has anyone heard anything about this?

DS has indicated he would prefer to go to in person classes, at least to a college that is making plans to be in person. Obviously, if the vaccine rollout is not successful, etc. he understands but if GT is currently planning for online that seems overly conservative.
