Georgia Tech Class of 2025 -- Regular Decision

I was accepted to Georgia Tech OOS, but rejected from UW OOS.

Yes! I checked in the portal just now and it says it’s under review and that invitations will be out by April 12th.

How does everyone feel about the Living Learning Communities? Should I encourage my son to apply? Do they provide access to better/newer dorms?

It is an individual choice. Not better dorms. They just live all together in the same dorm based on LLC. My son had no interest. He knew he was going through fraternity rush and found his group that way. It is a good way for kids to instantly find a group of like minded people - as each LLC is different and attracts different people. There is a good description of them on the GT website. They do cost more. There have been some complaints this year that the extra cost was not worth it because there was no additional programming due to Covid. Not sure if people consider it worth it in normal years. I would have your kid look over the descriptions and see if any appeal to him. Not sure of application deadline though? Those may have passed already.

Same for us

Have merit scholarships been issued to RD applicants yet?

My understanding is you need to apply EA for merit.

same.

Umich vs Purdue vs Gtech.
All 3 are OOS with no scholarship. All 3 admission are for CS major. Which one is a better program?

All have excellent programs and computer science is incredibly employable no matter where you get your degree. If it were my child I would look at the finances and if equal tell them to go where they could see themselves for four years. College is supposed to be fun, and fit is a big part of that.

Same for us.

You have 3 fabulous choices. I agree with VirginiaBelle and look at cost. Then I would consider proximity to family maybe? Two different climates there as well. Congratulations.

All great programs all in different communities/types of settings.

GTech highest rated COA is about 50k/year but urban campus but also Atlanta is great city with great opportunities

Purdue COA about 45k so cost is comparable to GTech, huge CS program, Chicago is about 2-1/2 hours away but students don’t just go there regularly, largest internship fair in the country and job fair and major companies come there but somewhat rural campus. Much smaller than Michigan size wise.

Michigan - essentially will cost you similarly to an Ivy, also Ann Arbor is very expensive to live, easy to fly to Detroit, Michigan sports, Engineerinf campus is about 10-15 mins north of campus a bus ride away but classes will be throughout main campus and north (engineering) campus. It’s a large campus but you do get used to it very easily.

If you have to take loans then don’t go to Michigan. It’s not worth taking loans.

@Ccdadpa Adding to @srparent15 great post.

My son and two of his friends have somewhat similar situations, with a few in-state as the difference.

Friend #1 picked GT over in-state, Purdue, and Mich. He enjoyed his visit, prefers warmer weather, smaller campus, wants to be in a highly competitive environment, wanted to be away from home but wanted to fly home often and easy. Obliviously money wasn’t a factor.

Friend #2 almost picked Mich but felt he could get the same experience at UT or A&M with in-state costs. He was accepted to Purdue and GT but he did not enjoy his visit to Purdue because he went during winter, which was enough to scare him away. He didn’t like that GT was 60% male. Money is a consideration for them. He’s leaning A&M over UT because he has more friends there.

Son is waiting on April 6 Ivies. Son didn’t like the way Mich campus was laid out and felt he could get the same experience in-state from UT and A&M. He experienced the same cold for Purdue and at 18 sometimes that’s enough. My son really enjoyed, I mean REALLY enjoyed GT. But there were two big negatives in 60% male and the City of Atlanta. The city-vibe immediately off campus is what will most likely keep him from GT, UT and Rice as well.

All three of your choices are fantastic. Which one fits your child’s personality and gives them the best opportunity to succeed? Is there a program, professor, or research opportunity that’s makes one stand out over the other? Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. We already live in cold weather (upstate ny) so weather is not an issue. We do plan to visit schools before deciding. Ofcourse April 6 will make it even worse to make decisions. I am hoping he gets into one of the 5 ivys he applied.
