What's the easiest way to get from Berkeley to Stanford without having a car? How long does it take? Also need to be able to leave Stanford around 7pm and get back to Berkeley the same night.

you can try using 511.org to plan the route using public transit. It looks like you’ll have to use a mixture of bus, bart and caltrain to get there.

It would see the most straightforward way would be something like BART to Millbrae, transfer to Caltrain and head to the Palo Alto station, and I seem to remember hearing there’s some way to go directly from there to the Stanford campus. Not sure about the last part, check that.

Simplest way to use public transportation is to take BART from Downtown Berkeley to Millbrae, then take Caltrain to Palo Alto, then walk along Palm Drive into the Stanford campus. However, note that Caltrain does not have high frequency at some parts of the day or on weekends, and not all Caltrains stop at all stations (check the schedule).

You have a few options:

1.) BART to Millbrae and take the CalTrain
2.) AC Transit F (or BART) to SF (or Millbrae) and take the SamTrans KX (express), 292 (local), or 397 (owl service)
3.) BART to Union City and take the Dumbarton Express

Then a couple less realistic ones:
1.) Call a taxi or use Uber; be prepared to spend ~$120
2.) Bike across the Dumbarton Bridge from Union City BART (~15mi, rough approach)
