Getting into IU

I'm still a HS junior, but I'm really interested in coming to Indiana in Fall 2011.

I know there aren't any real cutoffs, but in general, what are the cutoffs for GPA/SAT/Rank for getting into IU? As in, what are the LOWEST stats they would accept?

It’s not ridiculously tough to get into, but it’s getting harder every year. At the red carpet day a few weeks ago, they told us that they’re yet again expecting a record breaking class with an average GPA exceeding 3.8 and an average ACT score of 27.

So speaking off that, 3.5+ and 26+ should probably be just fine. For next year, if what they said about this year’s cycle is true, you may want a 3.7+ and around a 27-30.

They also look at class rank. You probably need to be in about the top 40% of your class to have any shot at getting in. It used to be top 50%, but as LoonLake pointed out, it does get tougher each year.

Also, if you go here:

http://www.indiana.edu/~upira/reports/compliance/doc/common_dataset/CDS_2009/IUB_2009.pdf

and look at page 8, you’ll see that it said that out of last year’s entering freshmen, 46% had a GPA of 3.75 or better, and another 22% had a GPA of 3.50 to 3.74. So that means 64% of all entering students had a 3.50 or above–as LoonLake predicted. (I think IU-B uses a weighted GPA, though in doing these numbers).

On the same page, it says 71% of all entering freshmen were in the top 1/4th of their high school graduating class and 96% of all entering freshmen were in the top half of their high school graduating class (and probably the 4% that weren’t in the top half were recruited for specific sports like basketball or football–or had really excellent skills in something like music or art.)

Note that the SATs average around 1180-1200 or so on just the two parts (CR and math) and the ACTs average around 26-27. It also tends to be a bit tougher for OOS students to get in that in-state students.

I got in and know people who also got in with lower GPAs than the average (below 3.6) but they’re definitely rejecting/deferring more people with lower stats. I’m guessing next year will be more competitive as well.

In order to be safe, you probably want to have at least a 3.5 with an SAT score of 1200.

I was just admitted with a 3.0 unweighted gpa and 1240 SAT. I also sent in a good essay which I think helped a lot.

It depends. I think what everybody above is saying seems accurate in general, but not at my HS (New Trier, IL) I think they realize NT’s prestige and they take a lot of kids from here. I got in this year (and into Kelley) with a 3.3 UW/3.8 and a 32 ACT. I have 2 friends who had a 2.8/3.0 W GPA and got waitlisted. So it can depend on the school. I’m actually amazed at those stats posted above since most at my school take it for granted. I’m probably going there next year and I’m pretty excited.

I got in this year with a 3.4 gpa and a 26 act

3.6 unweighted 1780 SAT 26 ACT… but others with lower stats in my school have been accepted.
