Getting wisdom teeth taken out

I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out, and my appointment is May 31. None of my teeth are impacted which is good, but one is a bit angled and one is only about halfway through and then one they told me that they would probably have to cut some of the bone to get out. Fun, right?

Who has their wisdom teeth? What about who has gotten them taken out? I'm a little worried, but not too worried. My sister just got her out and it sucked a lot for her, but all four of hers were impacted so the oral surgeon told me my experience would be a lot easier.

Any stories or advice for when I get them out?

I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as everyone says it is. I got all 4 of mine removed and they all were still under my gums with a little bit of one sticking out. The first day you’re going to go home and sleep like all day and from then on just take your pain medications and you’re good. I never really felt pain; the worst part to me was the fact that I would get so hungry and I could only eat yogurt or soup or ice cream…after two fays I think I could eat a sandwich and then it got better.
pretty much just prepare for hunger not pain

Also, I got mine pulled a couple days before christmas and I had to watch everyone eat their nice hot food while I sat there drowning my sorrow in strawberry yogurt haha. That was the worst part of it for me

I had 2 fully impacted (under skin and bone) removed.* I got dry sockets and an infection, partially because I didn’t take care as well as I should have about the saltwater rinses.

Make sure that you don’t drink out of a straw, period. You’ll have to get stitched back up. Also make sure you get good painkillers, because I only had 2 and it hurt so bad. Mashed potatoes, pudding, and mac ‘n’ cheese are the best.

*I had 2 wisdom teeth, my twin sister had one, and the other one was a tooth inside the roof of my mouth that got removed when I was in middle school.

All four of mine are impacted and I lose them Friday! This thread has comforted me though.

I had all four taken out by oral surgen because they were very close to the main nerve that runs through you jaw. I don’t remember much about the extraction (they gave me an IV of stuffs with something to knock me out).

I do remember the nurse lady running me into the wall whilst i was sitting in the wheel chair.

This was my second surgery in my mouth (my first was done about two years before this one) so I kinda knew what to expect.

I do, however, suggest staying on soft foods past the time that they say too, then slowly adding them back in.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone.

jspeed - I just realized something really upsetting…I scheduled the surgery for the same weekend my town’s big annual festival is which means I won’t be able to eat any of the awesome food there is :frowning: There’s always fried dough tons of ethnic foods and other yummy stuff! Guess I’ll be sticking with smoothies this year. Those are amazing too, but it’ll suck not being able to eat real food when there’s gonna be so much around. I’ll also get a couple of wine slushies to make myself feel better.

^ look at it this way, if you get it done now you won’t have to deal with it later when it becomes a problem.

Yeah, I’m keeping the appointment, it just sucks. I always eat a bunch of food at the festival…but as I said, guess I’ll have to go with smoothies and wine slushies this year (first year I can get wine slushies so that’s a perk).

I haven’t had mine out yet but I ha oral surgery when I was younger and they had to go down in my gums, all it did was make me really tired from the medicine and a little sore. I ate a lot of pasta because if it’s small enough you can just swallow it. Also, if you have the wine slushies, make sure your pain medication doesn’t have a warning about drinking alcohol with it (assuming you’re still taking it). I’m sure it won’t be too bad!

^ I think my first surgery (I had to have a tooth exposed in the front because it never came in) hurt more than getting my wisdom teeth out. But they had to go deeper then what they thought they would have to on that one. I have a nice scar to show for it now.

Singdancerunlife, yea that’s gonna be a toughie haha. You’re gonna be soooooo hungry for everything you see it’s not gonna be funny. But yea like icedragon said, be happy you’re getting it done now before anything really bad happens
short term pain for long term gain

It’s different for each person. I had all four taken out, was knocked out (and loopy for like an hour after, haha), and then spent the rest of the afternoon sleeping and watching a movie. When I took the first painkiller, however, it turned really badly and I got really sick - I couldn’t keep any food down for about a day. So I didn’t take the painkillers, which is why it was probably more painful for me than most people (I found out later that I’m allergic to percocet…classic).

My little sister, on the other hand, got all four out, had minimal swelling, took the painkillers, and was back to feeling and looking normal within two days. I probably would have been similar if I hadn’t had such a reaction to the painkillers. Somehow, I didn’t get dry socket even though I threw up a lot, so it all ended up being fine.

Dude I just got two of mine pulled (the ones on my right) two days ago. I’m a little swollen/bruised but not too bad. My bottom one was impacted so that side is bothering me more now what with the huge hole. The top one was almost all the way in - there was just not enough space for it to be there comfortably. The meds they gave me have given me no problem whatsoever and I can eat pretty fine now - I just try to eat on my left side, lol.

Honestly, I don’t know how I would manage to eat all the food I’ve been eating with all four teeth taken out. Probably just yogurt and soup, all the way which would have sucked. i was so hungry that first day. I’ve been eating stuff I shouldn’t probably be eating so soon after, lol. It sucks because today was Mother’s Day and I couldn’t eat some of the food that was served. Oh well, I still ate stuff I shouldn’t have, haha.

Just ice your face and take your meds! For me, the meds they gave me didn’t make me sleepy or drowsy or anything like that. They helped with the pain but you still feel it. I had a sore throat and jaw the first day but that went away for the most part with the meds. Also be careful eating. Since you’re gonna have all four pulled out, you probs can’t get away with eating anything you want like I kind of have been doing. NO straws and NO food too hot.

I didnt think it was too bad when I got mine out. I was wobbly walking for maybe the first hour or two. Then it wasnt bad, just numb and puffed up cheeks for about a week.

I’m planning on taking the pain meds they give me only if the pain is unbearable…I hate the way narcotics make me feel so I’m going to avoid them if at all possible.

I still have my wisdom teeth and I am 21. The dentist has always said it doesn’t look like I need them out and they have never hurt.

^ You are very lucky then.

Outside of the nerve thing, I also had went through 7 or so years of orthodontics (long story short, I had a major overbite, overly large teeth, and a small jaw, it was either this or having them break my jaw when i was older to correct it). There was simply no room in my mouth for them (one did break through my gume and daaaaamn did that hurt).

Charlie87star - I won’t be mixing meds with alcohol. I hate the way narcotics make me feel so I’ll only take them if absolutely necessary, and they also make me so tired that I wouldn’t be able to go out and get a wine slushie anyway.

jspeed - Yeah, although I’m sure if I put it off for a week it would be okay…but I said I wanted them out ASAP and I meant it because they’ve been causing me pain so why wait?

reesezpiecez - Dang. I’m going to be knocked out (definitely opted for that!! No way do I wanna be at all awake during the procedure!!). Hopefully it won’t be too bad for me.

Writer - You’re lucky that you had them out on the same side rather than all 4. It’ll be impossible for me to eat for a bit because I’m getting them all out.

They’ll give you an instruction sheet–follow it. Do the saltwater rinses, for example. Keep ice on as long as they say.

My son was told that if you eat half a pineapple the day before the surgery, the swelling will be less. My wife (a doctor) scoffs at this advice, but my son ate the pineapple, and his swelling wasn’t too bad–but he also kept the ice on, slept sitting up for the first 24 hours, etc. My wife still scoffs at the pineapple.
