girls & makeup

In response to the new questions...

Are you happy with the way you look? What are you self-conscious about? What things have you done to alleviate any of your perceived "flaws"? What's your style? Fashion? Brands? I'm relatively happy with the way I look... I like my eyes, my nose, my lips, my breasts, my butt, my calves, my hands, and my feet. Parts of my body I'm self-conscious about are my tummy, my thighs, and the circles under my eyes. Those would, I suppose, also be considered my flaws, physically-speaking. Style-wise I'd say I'm relatively normal-looking... the "casual college look with just a hint of prep (ie: I wear polos but I don't pop the collar)" perhaps? Anyway I shop at stores like... GAP, The Limited, Express, Aeropostale... along with TJ Maxx and Marshalls for lovely discounts :D

What do you think about $100-200++++ priced jeans? Why? Thoroughly excessive... you can get a perfectly good pair of jeans for under $100.

What magazines do you subscribe to? (Doesn't necessarily need to be Seventeen, Vogue, Cosmopolitan... throw in Economist, Nat'l Geographic etc) Well, I don't have any magazine subscriptions... my parents get Scientific American and National Geographic, the second of which I'll read from time to time

Tampons or pads? I definitely prefer pads... I'm not quite, uh, used to the feeling of tampons, if you get my drift :D. I'll wear tampons, however, if I'm going swimming or something...

Do you guys like body lotion/spray? Bath & Body Works? etc. Yes, but I won't buy them for myself... that's a very common Christmas present around here, so I just stock up at Christmas and use the stuff for the year. I like some of the Bath & Body Works scents (the apple-kiwi lotion & the warm brown sugar or whatever it's called spray), however, my favorite perfume-y sort of scent is Clinique Happy

Also - skin care:
What's your skin-care routine? Do you have pimples or the occasional bump? Murad? Pro-Activ? Clinique? OTC products, St. Apricot's Scrub/Clean&Clear/Clearasil/etc. ...? How about Queen Helene? (From my exp. queen helene's mint julep masks is THE mask to have )
I use some sort of cleansing pad whose name I forget at the moment each night and then clearasil for the occasion bump. My skin is pretty good... I get a couple of pimples every so often around my period but it's definitely cleared up quite a bit in the past year or so as my hormones have begun to settle down, I guess.

What type of underwear do you wear (bikini, low rise, thong, v/g-string, brazillian, tangas, etc.....)? I tried on a thong (or was it a g-string?) once for my boyfriend of the time and HATED it... so yeah, I don't wear those. Low rise bikini is the way to go...

I like The Economist too. I'm a little bit behind in my subscriptions.

Do you guys like whale-tails? (thong showing outside of pants) o_o

So far I've only posted survey-type questions. I guess we could touch upon femininity, double-standards, media depictions of women, and so forth. I do not know where to begin though unless I wanted a more historical approach and then throw in development of the make-up industry and ask why women are shopaholics and not males. I'd probably throw in a random statistic or suggestion of gathering berries in the forest to support a mostly patriarchal family and discuss gender roles in different nations at different time periods and in isolated versus socialized communities...*

One of the flaws I noticed in my questions and answers was that I assumed or created a caricature of a shop-crazed, consumer-aware, bordering-on-vain, woman character whose desires include (and are almost suggested to be limited to) how well their hair, makeup, skin, clothing, and $$$$ in regards to shoes, bras, handbags, and especially 100-200 dollar jeans. In that sense, I'm quite disappointed but I made the aim of the thread particarly in regards to what started off as a "discussion" about prices, women necessities, and other facets from the aforementioned.

Of course, adding or forcing discussions from somewhat clich

So here's a more serious question:

What do you think of the magazine Cosmopolitan? How about Seventeen in regards to your experiences in high school? How about some other publications? What do you think about the articles?

In Seventeen, I recall a distinct section focusing on girls and stories about their embarrassing periods. Of course there's all of the celebrity-centered subjects throughout the pieces such as "what were you like when you were 1?"

In regards to Cosmo, what do you think about articles such as "101 Sex Moves to Make Him ___________"? Or others? What do you think it says about women sexuality?

Of course, neither of the publications are meant to have substance... I'm skeptical of their using major current events and presenting various stories from people... it feels odd and misplaced. For instance, in the case of Andy Anderson in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" she specifically goes over this issue in her wanting to write about Tjakistan in a publication designed towards young women in regards to fashion, make-up, dating, and so forth. What are their priorities and where should they align? What does it say about their targeted audiences and their status as large, popular, and general publications seeking to target a specific demographic? Are they successful and why?

Some flaws I can notice immediately but I would like the questions to be answered anyway: It is implied, and suggested, that by making a blanket observation about the publications (in accordance to my assumed popularity and number of subscriptions) that the publications pervade and dominate young women in what I suggest to be one facet that is highly exaggerated and superfluous.

What do you think of the magazine Cosmopolitan? How about Seventeen in regards to your experiences in high school? How about some other publications? What do you think about the articles?
I read them from time to time if they have interesting articles, but I never buy them.

In regards to Cosmo, what do you think about articles such as "101 Sex Moves to Make Him ___________"? Or others? What do you think it says about women sexuality?
They're fun to read haha I think it says cares about everything little thing they do and they, not just guys, think about sex

Are you happy with the way you look? What are you self-conscious about? What things have you done to alleviate any of your perceived "flaws"?
One thing that I'm very happy with is my level of fitness. I'm in shape, I'm skinny (NATURALLY so...) but I have a healthy weight due to muscle, and I even have a six-pack... despite the fact that I rarely do sit-ups, it came naturally from all the other exercise =) However, I also look very young. I'm a size 32A, and I've been told by some of my friends that, despite the fact that they think I'm funny, smart, and otherwise attractive, guys don't really have an interest in me because of this. Needless-to-say, this angers me... a LOT... The sad thing is, I know that all men are like that to some extent, and I have panic-attack-y days when I feel as if I'll never find someone. Then I stop caring and move on.

What's your style? Fashion? Brands?
Vintage-inspired clothing (I bought REAL vintage clothes on eBay once and my mother threw them out, because, in her words, "You have no idea where they've been!" Yes. That's the type of world that I live in). I buy my jeans from AE because they're reasonably good quality, fit me well, and are cheap, but I also buy jeans from TJ Maxx and Marshalls (if they're good quality). As for tops, I buy from Forever21, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Free People on eBay (waaaay cheaper!!!), RANDOM stuff on eBay, and, last but not least, my favorite stores of all time, TJ Maxx and Marshalls =)

What do you think about $100-200++++ priced jeans? Why?
To be fair, I've never bought/even tried on expensive jeans, so maybe something magical and amazing happens when one tries them on... but I've always done just fine buying cheap jeans =)

What magazines do you subscribe to? (Doesn't necessarily need to be Seventeen, Vogue, Cosmopolitan... throw in Economist, Nat'l Geographic etc)
Nat'l Geographic and the Boston Globe (not a magazine, I know, but what I normally read in the morning! And, actually, every Sunday the Globe Magazine is included with the paper so... =D)

Tampons or pads?
Tampons when swimming or working out, pads on most other occasions.

What type of underwear do you wear (bikini, low rise, thong, v/g-string, brazillian, tangas, etc.....)?
Low-rise.

Do you guys like body lotion/spray? Bath & Body Works? etc.
I prefer scentless body lotion. Occasionally, I'll put on some spray... it can't have a very overwhelming scent, though!

What's your skin-care routine? Do you have pimples or the occasional bump?
I get the occasional bump. I simply wash my face every night, then put on some moisturizer. In the morning, after my shower and before I put on makeup, I apply some moisturizer as well. When I do get acne, it's usually very mild, so I just wash my face with some sort of special acne cream.

I don't ever wear make up. All I do is put on sunscreen which helps keep shine away from my face.

Other than that, I'm bare.

Girls: Do you wear make-up?
...everyday or frequently? or only for dates or going out?
No, I don't even know how to use it. I use a compact occasionally, though.
...if you do wear it frequently, do you feel self-conscious or insecure when you're not wearing it?
n/a
...Do you get more compliments and more attention when you are?
What's a compliment? I've gotten only a couple in my life, hehe. Or maybe it's the fact that I ignore most compliments because I think people don't really mean it?
How much makeup do you wear? Eyeliner and eyeshadow only? Something like this or more like this? (More natural looking as opposed to... full-face)
...Do you feel more self-confident about yourself?
No, I actually feel kind of fake. My mom's put make-up on me for occasions, and I hate my face then.
...add any other comments.

What magazines do you subscribe to? (Doesn't necessarily need to be Seventeen, Vogue, Cosmopolitan... throw in Economist, Nat'l Geographic etc) Reader's Digest

Tampons or pads? Pads!

I hope everyone is aware that ladies' fashion is targeted towards impressing other women, and is thus largely independent of (heterosexual) male opinion. Otherwise, the clothes you'd be seeing would be completely different. (Also note that most prominent fashion designers are either gay or women)

I've never really thought about where specifically cosmetics fit into this; certainly, it improves a girl's appearance and makes her more attractive to men, but it's frequently other women who pronounce final judgement on its quality and utility.

VOGUE IS LOVE!

Tampons or pads?
Pads, duh.

Oh, and shoes. I usually wear my dad's shoes around the house, and a beat up pair of shoes out of the house. I recently located five pairs of shoes so that I could take them to college.

Eye liner, eye shadow, mascara, lip gloss

...Do you feel more self-confident about yourself?
About the same

Do you have an expensive handbag too?
I have quite a few of those... Dooney & Burke, Coach, Louis Vuitton

How many handbags do you have?
Too many to county

Are you swayed by consumer culture?
Probably, I like to buy what I think is fashionable, so if fashion is dictated by consumer culture, then so am I.

Do you get your eyebrows waxed?
I have a natural arch, so I maybe get them waxed once every couple of months.

Do you get tanned? (either lying outside in bikini or being baked in a tanning oven).
I'm already black

Manicures and pedicures?
All the time!!

Hair salons? ($100 hair coloring versus $7 box of Loreal @ Rite-Aid?)
Once a week!

How much do you spend on beauty products?
Probably too much.

Having to buy bras for 40 bucks a pop at VS doesn't help either. Yeah... gift certificates to that place are great. I think half my bras come from VS and all my underwear.
I get all my stuff from Victoria's Secret!!!

Also, what do you think of corsets?
Not my style (unless it's over a really cute blouse)

Fake eyelashes?
I have pretty long eyelashes to begin with.

Fake nails?
Nope, I have naturally long nails because of all the maintenance I put into them.

fake hair?
Nope.

What type of underwear do you wear (bikini, low rise, thong, v/g-string, brazillian, tangas, etc.....)?
Whatever I buy from VS.

Do you guys like body lotion/spray? Bath & Body Works? etc.
I hate scented body lotion... I much rather prefer to put on unscented lotion and then use perfume.

What's your skin-care routine? Do you have pimples or the occasional bump? Murad? Pro-Activ? Clinique?
I have a pretty relaxed routine. I wash my face every morning and every night.

Do you wear sunscreen everyday? What SPF?
No, not really.

Are you happy with the way you look? *
Very.

What are you self-conscious about?
I wish I could be a little bit thinner, but nothing to stress about.

What things have you done to alleviate any of your perceived "flaws"?
I work out a lot

What's your style? Fashion? Brands?
I like to be very fashionable. I shop at name brand stores, etc.

What do you think about $100-200++++ priced jeans? Why?
They are a great buy. They fit so well.

What magazines do you subscribe to? (Doesn't necessarily need to be Seventeen, Vogue, Cosmopolitan... throw in Economist, Nat'l Geographic etc)
Vogue, Lucky, Cosmo, The New Yorker, Nesweek, InStyle

Tampons or pads?
Tampons...Pads are sorta gross

I dont wear makeup.Im always touching my face and sleeping and stuff so I'd just smear it all over the place. And I dont think I need it. Its weird but I actually like my flaws better than the good parts of my face. Like I have dark area under my eyes and thats my favorite part of my face. I don't paint my nails because I end up just scratching it all off. I dont wear perfume either. And the last time I went to the haircut place was like 6 months ago and it cost $12 that should tell you how much I take care of my hair/
Geez I feel like a man compared to the rest of you...

I think I look gorgeous without make-up.

Honestly.

^ But, aren't you a guy?

How much do you spend on makeup?
Very little.

Do you have an expensive handbag too?
I can't think of one, so no.

How many handbags do you have?
A couple.

Are you swayed by consumer culture? ...is this just a woman thing?
Maybe a little. This is definitely not just a woman thing, I can name lots of guys who are x10 more "swayed" than I am.

Do you get your eyebrows waxed?
No.

Do you get tanned?
From a salon or bottle? Nope. It's natural.

Manicures and pedicures?
No.

Hair salons?
Nah. I go to the barber once in a while.

How much do you spend on beauty products?
Not much.

Having to buy bras for 40 bucks a pop at VS doesn't help either.
Everything at VS is push up and/or mega padded. I shop at less fake/desperate places.

Also, what do you think of corsets?
I don't like them. Not my thing.

Fake eyelashes?
I wouldn't have the patience to go through such a hassle.

Fake nails?
My natural nails are fine.

fake hair?
No thanks.

Um...VS isn't all fake and overly sexual...well over half of their bras and panties are normal but of much higher quality than most of the stuff at less expensive department stores.

from what i heard most VS secret bras arent that great quality for what you pay
i think calvin klein makes the best ones

Girls: Do you wear make-up?
Yes

...everyday or frequently? or only for dates or going out?
During summer if I'm just sitting around the house all day or going out really quickly to the store i wont put anything on unless i have the most ungodly zit ever, but if I'm going out to the mall or to hang out with friends then yea I put makeup on. During school I wear it everyday though.

...if you do wear it frequently, do you feel self-conscious or insecure when you're not wearing it?
Ehh maybe a little bit at first if I'm going out, but then i usually get over it within five minutes and then forget the rest of the day that I'm not wearing make-up.

...Do you get more compliments and more attention when you are?
I dont think so, unless I wear eyeliner since I dont wear it that often.

How much makeup do you wear?
If its a typical day I just put concealer under my eyes since I have the WORST raccoon eyes ever! And then I'll put a little bit of foundation on to cover up any blemishes and swipe some mascara on and I'm done! I'll only wear eyeliner if I'm going out somewhere nice or going out on a date with my boyfriend.

...Do you feel more self-confident about yourself?
A little sure.

How much do you spend on makeup?
Well all the makeup I use is Lancome. Seriously, its the best makeup I've ever come across in my life! So when I do spend money on make-up yea its a lot haha.

Do you have an expensive handbag too?
Yess, I'm a Coach lover

How many handbags do you have?
Lets not go there...

Are you swayed by consumer culture?
Yes, since I like to wear whats in style and look like I know what's in and what's not. I read fashion mags like its my job lol.

Do you get your eyebrows waxed?
I've never gotten them waxed. I just pluck...to tell you the truth I'm little scared to because I'm soo afraid they'll eff it up but whatever I'm sure I'll get them done one day.

Do you get tanned? (either lying outside in bikini or being baked in a tanning oven).
Well I'm already naturally tan, but I do love going to the beach and laying out since its summer. I've never been to a tanning bed before in my life and don't plan on it ever. I have gotten a spray tan before though just to try and cover up my bikini strap lines since I was going to this fancy event, but it ended up not working at all and I just smelled like complete s*t, so I'm never doing that again either lol.

Manicures and pedicures?
Recently I've been getting a TON. Like every week me and my mom will go, but thats just because I promised her I would try and grow my nails out since I've been a chronic nail biter my whole life. So she thinks getting a weekly manicure will help that which it has!

Hair salons? ($100 hair coloring versus $7 box of Loreal @ Rite-Aid?)
I used to get highlights a lot when I was younger and I never did the at home stuff, I always went to the salon because I was afraid I would screw it up. But ever since I went back to my natural color (which is so much better) I've just been getting trims once every two months, although I think its been about three now....

How much do you spend on beauty products?
Probably the same as the next teenage girl

Having to buy bras for 40 bucks a pop at VS doesn't help either. Yeah...
Alright, I'm bigger chested (C sometimes D cup) and honestly VS bras are FULL of padding and made for girls that are A and B. So whenever I wear a VS bra with a tight polo (like from A&F) I just feel like everyone is staring at my boobs all day. So if I'm going to wear something tight I have these 3 bras from the Gap that I wear. I have found a couple of bras from VS that work for me and don't have too much padding but that's after trying on like half the store which is such a pain in the a
*!!

Also, what do you think of corsets?
Honestly, I've never worn one before. They look cute, but really painful at the same time...The opening scenes of Pirates One comes to my mind when I think about corsets and how Elizabeth fainted from hers lol.

Fake eyelashes?
Just wearing mascara or using an eyelash curler should do the trick, seriously fake eyelashes are soo trashy and you always know when someone is wearing them.

Fake nails?
I used to wear them when I was younger, but now I'm trying to grow out my own. I still put them on for special occasions like homecoming and prom but thats it.

fake hair?
noo thanks

What type of underwear do you wear (bikini, low rise, thong, v/g-string, brazillian, tangas, etc.....)?
VS thongs!!!

Do you guys like body lotion/spray? Bath & Body Works? etc.
I wear Keri body lotion everyday. My skin gets soo dry on my legs and arms so I wear lotion all the time. I used to love going into Bath & Body Works and smelling all the lotions, but I never really got any. The BEST scented body lotion though is Love Spell from VS. My friend got it for me a couple years ago and its my boyfriend's favorite and I get compliments literally everytime I wear it, I'm like whooa I can't believe people can smell that!

What's your skin-care routine? Do you have pimples or the occasional bump? Murad? Pro-Activ? Clinique?
I had pimples really bad like a year ago and i tried EVERYTHING, (Neutrogena, Clearasil, Clinique) and nothing was working. So I was going to order some Pro-Activ but I just decided to go to the doctor and get a prescription and that cleared everything up right away. For daily routine though I just wash my face with Clean and Clear Blackhead scrub because I think all the beads in it gives it a much better cleaning.

Do you wear sunscreen everyday? What SPF?
No, just when I'm tanning. When I do it use it I just use SPF 8 since I dont burn easily.

Are you happy with the way you look? *
Yea, basically

What are you self-conscious about?
Hmm prolly my thighs or stomach, but what girl isnt?

What things have you done to alleviate any of your perceived "flaws"?
Nothing haha

What's your style? Fashion? Brands?
Well I've been shopping at A&F a lot recently, but I HATE anything that has ABERCROMBIE emblazoned across it in huge letters...overall though they have a lot of cute things. Umm I shop at a lot of department stores like macys, bloomindales, nordstroms. Other stores I've gotten some cute things from are anthropologie, bcbg, jcrew, and lacoste. But overall style, I LOVE things with an empire waist and long flowy tops. I'm definitely a jeans girl though I have so many pairs. Oh and give me a pair of slingback stilettos and I'll love you for life! lol

What do you think about $100-200++++ priced jeans? Why?
Well personally I dont own a pair, but I plan on buying some true religions soon...i tried a pair on and it was the perfect match! haha But honestly i LOVE charlotte russe jeans, thats where I buy all of mine and they fit me perfectly and look great AND they normally only cost about 15 bucks!!!

What magazines do you subscribe to?
Well the ones that come in the mail are US Weekly (no clue why but I still love reading it!), Vogue (which i adore!), InStyle, and People. I used to get Cosmogirl and Seventeen but I feel like I've kind of outgrown them. I'm thinking about subscribing to Conde Nast's Travlers magazine since I LOVE traveling and I can seriously sit and read one of those magazines for hours!

Tampons or pads?
tamps

In response to the Cosmopolitan argument, that magazine is definitely geared toward women 18 and older. But of course since I was about 14 anytime we would go to the drug store to fill prescriptions and have to wait an hour and I would head over to the magazine aisle and read Cosmo hidden behind another magazine like TeenBeat haha. I definitely learned a lot though from those magazines and I'm not just talking about the 101 ways to make your man whatever, but they have great articles on STD's, birth control, contraceptives etc. But yea I started buying them recently with my friends and my mom found one in my room and I dont think she bought my "I just read them for the fashion articles" excuse! haha
