I’m also planning on applying but I don’t know if the chance of me getting in is that great. Anyone care to share their credentials? How did you guys do in SATI/II, GPA, class rank, etc.

Go to the first page of this thread my details are on there…
SAT I did pretty average if not horrible! 1890 in SAT I and 700 and 660 in Maths 2 and Physics in SAT II…
Class rank top 5, GPA: 3.99/4.0 scale

And Year11/ Grade10: 95.6%, I did ICSE which is like the IGCSE in India…
But to be honest the extra-curricular things play a very big role in your admission decision too, and your interest and awareness about the course are the most important! Like if you have done any summer job/internship related to the field of your Undergrad course then they know you are atleast confident and aware of not certain of your choice!!
And forget about the chances of getting in, just apply if your really wanna go to some Uni which is further than your reach, cause Universities make exceptions with quite a few students every now and then!

I got into HKUST (BBA) in 2009 and I am currently in my second semester in the school. So I’ll just post my stats. Please refer if interested. Hope it helps
SAT: 1840 gpa: 3.0 AP cal ab 4, AP Econs both 4s, AP Chinese 5. No special awards or anything I guess … I was surprised they accepted me for the gpa.

Hey garagara2! As probably you know if you have gone through this thread, I will be joining in September 2010 for the Mechanical Engineering course…
How are you liking it there ? and where r you from ?
Oh could you tell me all this hype about Hall VII, if its actually worth it or is it just new, so hyped…? Which hall do you live in ?

garagara2: I had another question that someone else had asked on another thread: do people actually speak in mandarin on campus, or is it only cantonese? and can you opt for a language course in mandarin, like along with your main course, or as an optional course ??

Sarthak: Do you speak Cantonese?

Do people in HKUST speak Mandarin?

michiganfall: I have been learning Mandarin for 2 years now, so can speak fluently, but still can’t write and read a lot…
Cantonese is of no use here and no one (except people from Hk) know cantonese, so I don’t know any cantonese as well… However, when in Hong Kong I might learn to speak a little cantonese just for fun
however, I would like to continue with mandarin !
sorry I didnt answer your question at all ! As I said on the other thread, people in Hong Kong dont speak in Mandarin but do understand it, I guess the same would pply to HKUST… but garagara2 will be able to answer that better!

Hong Kong people (esp the younger ones) know Mandarin because they have to learn it at school (I rmb getting a D in mandarin hahaha), they just never really use it, that’s why they have a canto accent when speaking mando

waitatshu: okie… but do you know if they speak mandarin in HKUST? and can we take it as an elective course ?

waitatshu: did you say you are studying at HKUST ?

"waitatshu: did you say you are studying at HKUST ? "

no lmao, I moved to the US when I was in 7th grade haha

waitatshu: haha… ok… which part in US? I have relatives in Plainsboro (New York), Philadelphia, D.C, and some other places…
so where are you planning on going to for further studies ?

I have a question towards Sarthak. Which would be that how is the city university of hong kong? I wanna spend a semester there, I am asking in terms of campus and people?

dibbasatya: Hey! I think you mean the University of Hong Kong. Well it is supposed to be the best University in Hong Kong because of the large variety of courses offered and number of years its been there for… but the campus is in the heart of Hong Kong, which is bad because it is extremely crowded and feels nothing like a separate University life kind of a thing,… whereas, HKUST is in clear water bay, beach on one side, literally on campus, and mountains on 3 sides, and only 25-30 mins from the heart of Hong Kong and well connected… The HKUST campus is very pretty and the people are very friendly, besides it has cooler parties from what I have heard, but I could be wrong considering its all 3rd person experiences I’m giving you as of now… When are you planning on going to HKU? If you can wait till April then I could give you a first person account of all these Universities :)

Hey,Sarthak,i got a 2300 sat do you think i am qualified schlaorship at HKU and HKUST?my GPA is horrible but they said they mainly look at my SAT.

because I am studying in America so I am going to apply as International.

I will probably go to Peking or HKU for a semester as a study abroad program sometime after this year. I will kind of like the city feel more than the isolated feel. Also I my school does not have a program with HKUST or any other, so I am not gonna there anyway. Thanks for you input.

michiganfall: Thats great! Congrats! well I didnt send my SAT scores and they said they dont need them, but I’m guessing the score will definitely make you stronger as an applicant and brighten your chances of getting in, however the scholarship depends on your scores (IB/AP/IGCSE et cetera) from what I have heard, experienced and from what they have said too… hey what program/course are you applying for at HKU and HKUST ?

dibbasatya: Thats good… If you really want the city feel then Shanghai is the real place to go to!! THE BEST night life and still an intact culture! theres Fudan University, and Jiaotong University … For Beijing theres the Tsinghua University which is the best in China… Anyways good luck with making the decision… so what are you doing as of now ?

I am doing finance undergrad from Kelley School of Business, IU now.
