I could've sworn there was already a thread about this, but I can't seem to find it...

Anyways, my friend just got deferred, and we were trying to find whether or not he got the "good" or "bad" deferral. How are each worded? And does anyone have a clue as to how many deferred students get accepted/rejected?

I’m not sure how many deferred students are admitted, waitlisted, and rejected.

Typically a good deferrel letter will not ask for 7th semester grades.

I can’t say the words since there seems to be from this year and last year multiple different letters. I guess you can sorta compare bse off ones stats etc… I spoke with a classmate with also low stats as mine own ( but lower) and from discription we both have recieved the same letter. On cc I’ve reviewed other students stats and those who were likely “shoe-in’s” typically recieved the letter not wanting additional information.

This is the one I got. I don’t think it’s requiring that I send 7th semester grades, but suggesting that it will help my chances instead. Nothing changed on WA for me.

Thank you for your application to the U of M college of LSA. we are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your acheivements. however, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. as a result, we are writing to inform you that your app. is currently being deferred for further review.

while this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. your app. is one of a group that remains under consideration. all final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-april 2010.

please refer to the website for FAQ’s about the admissions process and what to do next. strong fall semester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. therefore, please ask your guidance counselor to forward your grades when they become available.

because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress.

I paraphrased but that was basically it. Any ideas on what it means?

^
Yours would be a example of a good deferrel. Basically the school would like to review and compare you to the coming applications before making such a decision to admit you. If the RD applications isn’t so strong you probably will be admitted, especially if your 7th semester grades are good.

So yes, as stated in your application it is still good news in a way.

just got my deferral today. i got the letter that says, “after multiple individualized & comprehensive evaluations of your application, we believe u have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus…however, due to our high application volume blah blah your application has been deferred.” so, i assume this is the ‘bad’ letter? :/

i’m actually not that upset. when i think about my grades/stats they are quite a bit below range & everything, so i can only assume that i was saved-ish by my essays/reccs/ECs. … people do get rejected, right?

so, should EVERYONE who has been deferred, send in their 7th semester grades or does it need to show up on wolverine?..because it still doesn’t for me.

p.s. when u do send in your mid-year grades, should u also send an updated resume or something? or do they just assume you’re doing the same activities as u always were?

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we find that we will need additional information in order to make a decision.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s admissibility. To give your application a fair evaluation, we will need your fall semester or second trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your completed semester or second trimester grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu if possible. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these completed semester or second trimester grades to our office at 734.936.0740.

We appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan and look forward to receiving the information requested. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or to have your high school counselor call me, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your application.

Sincerely,
Jarrett Smith
Admissions Counselor"

I find it strange that this letter says nothing about wait-listing, deferment, etc.

^
Yeah, I have the same letter as you… I also do not know why there was not a statement of deferrel. Perhaps they try to keep their letters to be not seen as harsh by the readers. Like those who did get letters with deferrels, it was include how app. is being highly considered. Then, this could be a way to try to keep the students interest to some extent.

yeah i have the letter that actually says u were deferred. like @ladygaga19’s. my friend got the other one like @DylanH and her stats are not as good as mine. im hoping i have the “good” deferral letter

^ The one that ladygaga19 has was written by the “Associate Vice Provost & Executive Director” of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (I believe Theodore L. Spencer was the name)

I wonder if that can imply how far our application went through the system before it got deferred?! Since DylanH’s letter was from the “Admissions Counselor”??

I wonder… I’d assume it could be, as the Theodore L. Spencer one was also the name on all of my accepted material. Hopefully that’s an easier measure of this than deciphering semantics!

What if a representative told me that my letter was mailed wednesday and that I should receive the letter in COUPLE OF WEEKS? Instead of getting it like today or something?

I’m sure he just said that to account for postal service delays. He doesn’t want you to keep contacting the office saying “OMG you said my letter would be here by now where is it!!!”

I got the same letter that ladygaga19 did. BTW that was a dam good paraphrase. That was almost word for word.

But anyway. I applied to engineering and got deferred as ladygaga19. Since they ask for my 1st semester grades can I pretty much count on getting denied if I have a D in calculus?

i don’t think they requiring you to send in your 1st semester grades; all they’re saying is that it’s gonna help you.

but, do you guys think these first semester grades will help my chances

AP US Gov’t: C or D
Orchestra: A or B
Pre-AP Latin 3: B or C
AP Physics C: Fail
AP English Literature & Composition: B
AP Calculus AB: C
Advanced Anatomy & Human Physiology: B

So can it safely be said that 7th semester grades are NOT required if we have ladygaga19’s letter (as i do)??..and it’s only required if we have DylanH’s letter? If so then that’s a major relief lol (I just checked, and I don’t have “7th semester grades notified” on my WA…so is that a good sign?)

Can we send in other recommendations and what not to Umich since we got deferred or no? Thanks for the help & speculation!
