Good BS/MD programs in Texas

I was wondering what are all the BS/MD programs available in Texas. I prefer BS/MD programs in Texas because I don't want to be in excessive debt after I graduate, but if there are other cheaper programs in other states, then please list them too. I already know about the Rice/Baylor program and it seems like one of the hardest to get into in the country. I'm looking for programs where you don't have to take the MCAT and you're directly accepted into the med school while you're still in high school. Also, does any advice on what would really help to get into these competitive programs would help.

I believe that UT San Antonio has one with UT Pan American for Texas residents only. In the MSAR book, it says it is for high school seniors, MCAT required. This is the only website I could find about it:

The University of Texas Health Science Center - School of Medicine

There is also Baylor/Baylor, too.

Aside from Rice/Baylor and Baylor/Baylor, I know of these two:

EMSAP @ UTMB

TTUHSC :: School of Medicine : Admissions : UMSI

Thanks, are there any out of state programs that don't put you in a lot of debt after you graduate?

Any med school is going to place you in high debt.

Also, many (if not all) of those programs you are asking about, still require you
to take the MCAT. However, you are required to keep a certain GPA throughout
your undergrad. and then your MCAT score can usually be lower than those of
others competing to enter the program.

Someone else may post more information on this topic; But, I researched heavily
gor my daughters regarding this same issue and that is the info. I obtained.

UT Austin (30 seats to UT Southwestern, 30 to UT Houston), UT Dallas (15 or 20 to UT Southwestern) and UT San Antonio (UT San Antonio) have programs that are 7 years. You have to apply to these schools and get into specific schools before they qualify you to apply for the next level, i.e., med school.

texaspg,

Isn’t UT Austin ( SHAPE) different than UT-PACT(Dallas) and UT-FAME(San Antonio) program ? My understanding is that for SHAPE you get into UT Austin ( Pre-Medical Leadership academy ) and then in Spring semester of Freshmen year few get selected to be part of Medical Leadership Academy. My concern with SHAPE is it could be hit or miss and you would have already committed to UT-Austin if you don’t get into MLA ( nothing wrong with a flagship UT-Austin but still…)

yetanotherid - From what I know, it is a guaranteed medical program. Based on 2012 admissions, the part that was not guaranteed was which school one is admitted to since there would be two choices for medical school. Once admitted, they are considered to be already in the accelerated program since they are required to do research in the summer after 12th and before 1st year of college.

[Southwestern - Houston - Austin Professional Education (SHAPE)](http://cns.utexas.edu/careers/health-professions/shape)

However, I am bothered like you by this sentence:

" they secure early admissions to the partner medical schools in the spring of their first year, they will then become full members of the Medical Leadership Academy."

They are supposed to be accepting only enough students to fill those 60 seats. So what this sentence means is anyone’s guess. I would interpret it as having picked a specific school to attend/a specific school picked you for admission but it works out if there are exactly 60 students for 60 seats. Otherwise, what you suggest seems right.

"How many candidates will be invited to be pre-Medical Leadership Academy students?

Because this is the first time we are openly recruiting for SHAPE, it is difficult to gauge how many applications we will receive. Given that we anticipate the medical schools accepting 15 students each, we will likely invite 40 to 45 students to participate in the accelerated curriculum as pre-MLA students."

This tells me that there is a gap of 10 or 15 , who will not get into the medical school ( or MLA) which makes Pre-MLA not a guaranteed combined program. or maybe I am reading this wrong, “invite 40 to 45” doesn’t mean “admit 40 or 45”. Maybe they are thinking Invite 40 or 45 and eventually they admit 30 which will be 15 for each medical school. Sigh… I wish this was clear.

This does sound totally different from the early premise. A lot of this information was not available when I first posted on 9/30 (you can see the date on link says 11/30).

The original premise said 30 seats at UTH and 30 seats at UT-SW. It sounds like they have cut back to 15 each?

So it will come down to how many they accept to the program.

Hi. I’m a Class of 2014 senior and am very much interested in the Texas BS/MD programs and just came to know that UT SHAPE is not accepting applications for 2014 Fall college freshman. That unfortunately narrows down my list, has anyone else got any experience with UTSA FAME? How good of a program is that in comparison to UT PACT and UT Health Science Honors and Texas Tech USMI? What are its pros and cons? How is its feeding med school–San Antonio School of Medicine–in comparison to other Texas Med Schools? All in all, how is the program as a whole?

Can anyone list the requirements to get into some of these programs?
Also, if anyone is in one of these programs, can you please share your experiences?
