Hi, i'm interetested in doing business, probably accounting or actuarial science, not sure which, in college. I was wondering what some nice colleges or universities are in the nation for accounting. I live in Illinois, so I was considering UIUC, but I wanted to also look out of state. However, I'm not too familiar with out of state universities for business. Any advice or help would be great =)
Also, I was looking for schools that offer a decent amount of financial aid or scholarships, as well, nothing crazy expensive.

UIUC has a top ranked accounting program. Also consider Indiana University - depending on your scores/grade point you might qualify for an automatic merit award. Texas is also a top ranked program but I don’t know anything about their aid.

Georgetown and Cornell(AEM program) will meet your financial needs. Carnegie Mellon and Emory should also have good aid. The best aid will be at MIT and Wharton.

*

What is your situation?

What are your stats?

How much will your parents pay?

Most OOS publics will not give you need-based aid, but SOME will give you various amounts of merit money. So, depending on your stats, and how much you need, we can give you ideas once we know more.

Will you QUALIFY for the need-based aid that you need from the schools that give them.

Schools like UT-Austin aren’t going to give you merit or FA. IU Kelley gives merit scholarships which can help, but the cost will still be significant.

UIUC, UT are top picks for accounting. For FinAd, you may need to look elsewhere. I was accepted by UIUC business. But didn’t get a penny from UIUC.

To be honest, if your universities business school is ACCREDITED by the AACSB it should be a good program. A better question would be: what’s the most prestigious program in my field of study ? ( whether it’s accounting, finance, mis, etc)

Plus you say that you need a good amount of FA.

how much will your parents pay? That may largely determine where you should apply.

Do you know what your EFC might be?

OOS publics don’t give much FA…and your stats aren’t high enough for large merit to cover much of the costs. It might also be harder for you to get acceptd to the schools that “meet need.”

Thanks for the replies, guys. I’m not too sure if I will test again. I was thinking of it, but a few people told me it’s kind of pointless since it probably won’t go up too much. And my family combined makes an avg. Income of less than $90,000, and we have 7 people in my family. I don’t know if that qualifies a whole lot for major financial aid needed.

I know uiuc has a good program in business, which is why I was looking into it. I heard they’re stingy with going away money, though, and I’m not going to join a sorority, which is the major choice for many students at uiuc. The college seems really big for me, but then again, I don’t know much about any other college that is as well known as uiuc that I could possibly get into.

And my act was a 28, 3.95 gpa. So nothing that would really classify me into the huge merit scholarships. =[

well, they don’t know what they’re talking about. If you practice…and take both the ACT and SAT, there’s a very good chance for improvement. A mom called me this morning (ACT scores released today) and her D’s ACT went up 5 points with practice…that’s huge…

It doesn’t qualify for much aid at MANY schools.

You need to test again (both ACT and SAT) and practice!..otherwise you could end up commuting to your local public if your family can’t pay for you to go elsewhere. Right now you’re in that “gray area”…decent scores, but not enough for the great FA schools and not enough for big merit to the schools with good B-schools.

thank you! well it doesn’t necessarily have to be financial aid that the schools give out, because i know i won’t qualify for a whole lot, but yet, my parents get worried for spending over $15,000 for tuition, probably because my sister received a full ride to her school when she was in college. But, it could be scholarships, as well. A school that gives out a decent amount of scholarships to students, including out of state students if i end up going out of state, would be great.

And as far as retaking the ACT goes, I guess I can try doing that. I just am terrible at studying and practicing for these things. I never took any prep class for the ACT, and I dont know what I can do to raise my score like you stated, mom2collegekids.

The problem is going to be your test scores. If they don’t improve, you’re not going to get the merit you need at a school (with a decent B-school) to go OOS that brings your parents’ part down to $15k. (and ask your parents about THAT amount…that’s a lot for a family with your income and family size.)

Do the math. To get all your parents costs down to about $15k, that means that you’d need to get a full tuition scholarship somewhere, so that your parents $15k will pay for room, board, fees, books, transportation, etc. With an ACT 28, you’re not going to get a full tuition scholarship to a school with a good B-school.

So…ask your parents how much they will pay…(ask about the $15k per year).

And…get yourself some SAT and ACT study books. Read the front sections for tips/advice and do the practice tests.

thanks =), the thing is my sister got the same act score as me and received a full tuition scholarship to her college, Northern Illinois, which has a decent accounting program. Now, when I look at the same scholarship she got, they’re only giving away partial tuition…so nowadays it is 10x harder to get that crazy of an amount of money as scholarships. I’ll try the ACT again =), thanks for the advice =).
Also, I was thinking of majoring in accounting and possibly math, as well, either a minor or as a double major. is that a reasonable combination, or would it be crazy tough? And would these schools listed be a good choice for both of those programs?
