Good candidate, I thought... but rejected from NEU!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to know what you think my chances are of getting into BU, CGS. I have a really competitive transcript - straight A’s since sophomore year - decent SAT scores (1810) and a really rich extracurricular background. I was rejected from Northeastern yesterday and I am now weighing my chances of getting into BU. My only thought is maybe because my application was so lopsided–almost all of my extracurriculars are in the performing arts, I didn’t get into NEU. I hear it’s very business-oriented? Who knows, maybe I’m just making excuses.

Either way, I am so horrendously worried about getting into BU. It’s my first choice by far, and this waiting is killing me. Does anyone want to tell me what they think my chances are of getting in? I just want to be honest with myself here.

sorry but its hard to tell...i guess u should be good...and as far as ec's are concerned i think they like passion focused on one area instead of jumping around here and there...but then again you never know.... if you can contribut in diversity then that would be really good coz so far ive seen BU lap up internationals....

Yea, I got rejected from NEU too, and am waiting on BU's decision.

You can see my stats on the NEU decisions page, its the first post lol

low SAT with straight As might mean grade inflation... but assuming you got about 600 per section, ur about the 25th percentile for BU... so who knows

I got waitlisted at NEU also and I was way in the 25th% of last year's class. Like what is going on over there?

I'm waiting on BU, but now I'm not very confident at all. However, I got accepted to Bard College, which is much more presitgious and selective than both BU and NEU. I really like BU though...so I hope I get in.

Admissions this year has been retarded.

MLevine: Honestly man, chill out. Your scores are not that good, and sure you have some good EC's but as I recall you only have a 3.6 GPA.

Now maybe if you spent more time studying and trying you'd get in. I don't see the people getting in complaining, you got rejected, and need to deal with you.

Your sole rejection in no way means that the system is "retarded" however it does accurately represent your ignorance in using a word that has the association with people who are actually, mentally or physically, retarded.

So maybe you should think about the language you use, gain some self respect, stop complaining and think of ways you could transfer in if you want to go there so badly.

...Served.

you got owned!!!!!!!!

NEU actually has lower admission rate than BU. But a 1810 for CGS should get you in. No worries man.

when did NEU get so hard to get into?

eh pikachu im not so sure about that. I applied with 3.6 UW GPA (Xieon I know thats not good lol but heinsights 20/20 i guess right?), 1920 SAT, over 9 extracurriculars done 3 or 3+ years plus many more ECs for 2 years, great recs, really thoughtprovoking essay (about myspace and facebook changing our societal interactions as a generation) and I applied to CGS just to be on the safe side for ED1 and I got deferred and still waiting. I think for every college the admissions process has become so much more competitive. If you go onto BU's website for the class of 2010 profile, and go to princetonreview and look at BU's class of 2009 profile, the SAT went from a 1267 to a 1333, which is a pretty severe rise. The bar has definitely been raised

I applied EA to Northeastern, got deffered, and then got waitlisted. I suppose it's because I applied to their Business Management program, which is much more competitive and esteem than the CAS.

I don't think MCLEVINE07 meant to be offensive but yeah, it can be pretty traumatic for somebody to get a rejection letter if they 1) Had that college as their top choice 2) Thought they had a good chance of getting in.

I didn't think it was necessary to post such a dare I say harsh comment, but I can understand also that life moves on. MCLEVINE07 I hope you hear better results from some other colleges, but I feel ya. NEU is trying to raise the bar, and that's why kids that may have been accepted even two years ago, are having a difficult time getting in this year.

and in response to the NEU thing. I am almost convinced it was all about early action. NEU accepted I believe a little over 10,000 kids this year out of the 30,000+ applications bringing the acceptance rate to 27%. 3,000 of those accepted kids were early action. I applied to NEU as a match early action and ended up getting accepted with a surprising 20k merit scholarship. Northeastern is also the fastest climbing college on the U.S. News and World Report college rankings. They're getting alot of attention for their co-op program and for their ranking jumps in the past 4 years, and the school has subsequently become more popular and attractive to HS seniors

i was very surprised to get waitlisted to northeastern. i have a 4.0 GPA and 1990 on the SATs (probably the weakest part of my application), studied abroad, lots of ECs, etc etc...just like you all said. I knew northeastern was pretty competitive but I got into NYU's Scholar Program and am just anxiously waiting on BU. i'll be surprised if i get into the schools I wanted to go to more like BU and NYU than neu. it did seem like a ton of kids were applying to northeastern from my hs this year though.

Thanks for your responses guys, it's nice to know that someone's in this freaking boat with me.

I guess it's not the biggest deal---I mean, I am trying to come to terms with it--but knowing I got rejected from one place is making it harder for me to be confident in another.

Is it true we find out from BU today?

Xieon, my comment was legit and not rude or arrogant at all. So I really do not know what your saying. Obviously I'm going to be ****ed when the girl ranked below me with no, I mean absolutely zero, ECs and a lower SAT/ACT got 11K scholarship EA. I'm short on money and only could apply to school I really really liked or that I could get money at, and yes I'm pretty upset that I didn't get into a school where people with lesser stats got scholarships. You are telling me to chill out, but have you read the rest of College Confidential. I mean, c'mon.

Oh, and my "sole rejection" isn't why I think it's been random, if you like that better retarded. Maybe if you read this thread and some threads over there, you'd understand. Alot of people with higher stats than the average were rejected/waitlisted, and quite honestly there is no pattern to it.

I think your GPA did it, MLEVINE. A 3.2 UW is not very good. Granted, I'm sure you took challenging Honors, Advanced and AP courses. But the fact that you took them isn't enough, I guess. I suppose they were looking for truely excellent grades in those challenging courses. But I do get your point. I know some people that were accepted that have no business anywhere near Northeastern's campus. The admissions process does seem extremely random this year.

It's possible that they knew you could do better and would likely not go-you know those situations

About the GPA...I was told by an admissions officer that the GPA they post is waited with the .5 (H) 1 (AP) system. Therefore, mine is in their middle 50% (3.3-3.9). The officer had also told me actual average was 3.5. My weighted GPA should have been find for them, especially from a private school known for huge grade deflation.

it might depend on the major you chose. 3/4 of my friends who applied for nursing got in, while several of my other friends who didnt apply to nursing (one applied for pharmacy, the other i think business?) got waitlisted/rejected. i feel like they both might have been more qualified than some of the nursing majors, but who knows. maybe the ones accepted had killer essays/recommendations.
