Good Food

I have a specific question about the food on campus.

Have any of you current students tried the salad bar at North Star? It sounds amazing, and very healthy (I have a thing for health foods), with its whole grain pastas, etc., etc. Are there any other good spots for health foods on campus in the way of dining halls, or is that an exception? I went to Okenshield's for Chinese New Year (right, gomestar? lol, that was nuts... so much food... Peking duck?!), but obviously didn't eat healthy. I know Wegman's is there, but, I don't want to have to trek downtown for good, healthy food. Any other suggestions? Thanks guys, in advance.

"Have any of you current students tried the salad bar at North Star? I dont usually get salads but Cornell certainly knows how to provide.

"Are there any other good spots for health foods on campus in the way of dining halls, or is that an exception?" I have found that the vast majority of food is made with health in mind. Unlike the average college dining hall, Cornell seems to have focused on foods that are both good in taste and good for you. You will have your typical grill items like burgers and chicken; and then there will be typical pizzas and pastas, but there is much much more. At RPU and Risley they have stir fry bars where (like a salad bar) you pick out a bowl of veggies and meat and then pick a sauce and they'll cook it all for you. North Star also has a sandwich bar. RPU also does the same "bar style" buffet for made to order omlets and pancakes on sunday brunches. Each dining hall will also have some "homestyle favorites" like roast chicken, rice, potatoes, veggies, steak, pork chops, fish ... the menu changes from day to day. A few of the dining halls also have large fruit bars. A few dining halls also have asian specialties such as woks and sushi bars with rotating menus. Each one also has 2-3 soups of the day.

"I went to Okenshield's for Chinese New Year (right, gomestar? lol, that was nuts... so much food... Peking duck?!), but obviously didn't eat healthy." No, it wasn't exactly a health food celebration, more of a gorge on shrimp, chicken, pork, duck, veggies, soup, dumplings and everything else that makes the Chinese New Year dinner unique and awesome.

"I know Wegman's is there, but, I don't want to have to trek downtown for good, healthy food. Any other suggestions?" Dont worry, I eat healthier at the dining halls than I do when I go out for dinner or eat in my room.

Eating healthy at Cornell is not a difficult task, if you're ever back on campus check out Appel or RPU on a normal night and you'll see what I mean.

if you want to eat it, they probably serve it. Appel has a salad bar, and there is a really wide selection of other foods. what other foods are you looking for.

Hmm, let's see... I'd be looking for WHOLE GRAIN breads/pastas instead of white breads/pastas, fresh veggies like spinach, broccoli, peppers (red, yellow, orange), asparagus (don't like it, but a lot of pepper can mask it's, uhh, flavor, heh), ****lean meats that aren't fried (chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef cuts), fresh milk/dairy (I know they have this stuff, I've had it from the dairy and it's SOOOO GOOOOOD), etc.

I could just keep going Sparty, but I won't do that to you, haha. I am also so excited that there is a Wegman's because I LOVE to cook. :D

cornell has it's own special flour that's extra healthy and nutritous that they make all their bread with. there are always veggies available, and there are chicken sandwiches always available to make, as well as other meats depending on the day. the milk ice cream and cider here are incredible (cornell made), and the orange juice is pretty damn good too (a notch below, but also cornell made).

hmm... Interesting. Thanks for the info, Sparty; I'll have to look into the "special flour."

Sparticus!
What about Indian(Asian Indian) food? Is it available in any of the joints? For Vegetarians, this will be helpful.

time to beware the freshman 15! ;)

also what kind of Japanese/Chinese food are there? and do freshmen have places where they can cook or plug in an electric cooker?

there is a mongolian grill where the cook right in front of you, and they have the fried rice, soup, and chicken and stuff in appel frequently

hahahaha, freshman 15... Doesn't that come mostly from beer, especially at Cornell? :p
