Good Sign?

Hi All,

This is my first post. I’ve read some other threads and it seems like sometimes a financial aid letter, call, etc is a good sign this late in the game… So my child received a call from B’s finaid office this week asking if we had any questions about finaid. They said they were reaching out to the families… The officer said they had all our materials and said that she knows its a frustrating time–the waiting period. And some other things…

Is this a good sign?

-Anxious Mother

i guess it's a good sign!! but do you think they are calling every potential accepted applicant just to ask if they have any question about financial aid? it seems weird! and a lot of work for the financial office!!!

^^ i agree, but it's not something that i could see them doing if the person was going to be rejected...

Yeah, I was wondering about that.

I got a call yesterday from Brown about my financial aid stuff being missing. I'm like okay. She tried to insist that they were separate from admissions, but it seemed as if a case of thou protest to much.

Plus they have to be combining financial aid awards with decisions around this time, since it's like a week until decisions.

I've been involved with Brown admissions for many years, as an alumni interviewer, and I've not heard of this happening before. I have no idea if it means anything -- it could be a good sign, or it could be the financial aid office wanting to do a survey and figuring this is a good time to do it. And the fact I haven't heard of it doesn't mean that much, since I certainly don't know everything that happens at Brown.

Are you saying that they lied to you??

thanks all. we'll wait it out and see.

Generally, my understanding is that the two don't communicate until decisions are out, essentially.

i actually got a call today too and thought the same thing.

i can't see it even being in the realm of possibility that the financial aid office would be calling 25,000+ applicants just to "reach out" and answer any financial aid questions. unless of course they've been doing this for a while, but with the rabid posters here at cc i'm sure we would have caught wind of it a long time ago.

i also noticed that the woman that called me seemed to be over stressing that she had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about my admissions decision. nothing. nada. zilch. it was odd.

i'm hoping it's a good sign.

What did they ask you? It's not like you have your fin.aid. decision, I don't see what their point in calling is. Anyway, I would say it's a very good sign.

I didn't get a call, but it seems like a good sign if you did.. i guess we won't know till the 31st, but if i were you guys i'd be stoked haha

atwhat time did they call you?

Well, I got home around five and it was after that.

I think thats a really good sign. I forgot to send financial aid the year i applied, and brown told me to please turn them in. The other schools that rejected me did not even care if i turned them in or not. Anyways, I did get accepted; this could be a good sign.

I think it would be cruel to call applicants who are being rejected a week before admission decisions are released to ask them if they have questions about financial aid. Admissions must be sharing the list with financial aid by now. It must be a good sign.

I was just going to ask the same question. I just got a call as well from the office of financial aid asking if I had any questions. She said that they were separate from the admissions office, but she did once say the phrase "when you matriculate into brown." It may just have been a slip of the tongue though. Who knows? I guess I"ll just have to wait.

thanks for all your replies :)
its nice to see that others were contacted as well.
we'll wait and seee..

Did anyone who got a call already have all their fin aid stuff submitted?

yeah, that's what was kind of strange to me. my financial aid stuff has been sent in for about a month now, and they just wanted to call me to "let me know it was all there", even though i could easily see that on my brown account, and "to see if i had any questions about brown's financial aid policy."

while i'm sure they are separate from the admissions office, given that you get your potential aid package on decision day, there is bound to be some sort of collaboration. why would the financial aid office waste time on preparing packages and sifting through mountains of paperwork for people who were just going to be rejected?

there were something like 14 applicants from my school and i asked around today and seemed to be the only one who got the call, which was definitely reassuring, lol.

it probably isn't anything significant (i keep telling myself this so i'm not too disappointed if i don't get in) but i'm sure keeping my fingers crossed!

exactly. we had everything in, so it was kind of a weird call.
