Good winter jobs?

What are some good jobs for people during the Christmas break? Any ideas?

ski resort

You can make some really good money in retail during the holidays if you have the stomach for it, but no job is going to hire you for a month over break.

Retail is hella awesome, Twisted, idunnowhatyertalkinbout

You can probably get a job in retail for the holiday season but it’s important for you to try to secure the job during your Thanksgiving break. Line it up then because the retail business will want you ASAP in December to help with the shopping season.

I enjoyed working in retail during the holidays, I made time and a half for holidays I had no idea were even holidays and I got overtime all the time! I sure got screamed at by a lot by angry soccer moms, though. Calendars are serious business.

You know you aren’t going to get hired JUST for Christmas break, though, right? They do holiday hire ins like… now. I got hired in October.

How do you find specifically winter jobs? I have no idea how to search for this stuff and would actually love to get some job experience ASAP.

It’s called a seasonal job. Mostly retail has them, they hire in more people in October/November because they know they need them for the holidays and then lay them off in January/February. There are also summer seasonal jobs, too. So when you apply, it should say like full time, part time, and seasonal-- that’s usually how mine have gone.

By now they might be full up, nobody wants to be training n00bs on black friday, but it’s worth a shot for sure. You never know what might turn up.

I did retail last fall / winter for a clothing retailer. It was warm, I saw my friends, and I got discounts. Good stuff. And since the clothes were targeted at the teen crowd, I didn’t have to deal with too many crappy costumers.

A lot of my friends do retail at places like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, stores that will always need an extra hand around during holiday. You could check those out if you need a job on short notice.

Yeah, basically look for applications online that say “Seasonal/Temp” or call in and ask. Major retailers are probably looking for extra bodies to staff the stores during the holidays, because a lot of regular workers schedule vacation/leave during the holidays.

And heh Twisted, for some reason I thought your “if you have the stomach for it” comment implied you didn’t like it. I guess I’m a masochist or something but I like the challenge of making a hard sale to a customer, as well as keeping composure and killing somebody with kindness when they’re making a huge deal out of something.

Retail baby. I’ve worked in retail for a bit over a year, and I love it! This year I think I’m working at Zumiez for the holidays (it depends on if Best Buy will take me back or not).

You could go to a staffing agency and get some temp jobs.

Why do you want to work during the winter break?

Um, to get money…

“And heh Twisted, for some reason I thought your “if you have the stomach for it” comment implied you didn’t like it.
I am pretty indifferent towards retail, but working retail during the christmas season is definitely not for everybody. XD One time I had this like 40 year old man start screaming at me and this other old guy was like DONT YOU DARE TALK TO A CHILD LIKE THAT (I was like 18) and they damn near got into a fight in the middle of my teeny tiny shop. I’m glad I had black friday off.

What if he or she HAS to work? I don’t have that option when I come home. Plus:

3 weeks x 35 hours = 105 hours
105 x 6.67 (7.25 minimum wage minus taxes, what I currently make) = $700

I guess that’s not significant to a rich kid. And that doesn’t count time and a half or double time for holiday pay, or two jobs. With two part time jobs during the holidays (60 hours a week), you could easily make over $1000 in three weeks. But, I guess only poor kids know that? Some people put in an effort to fund their own spending accounts or even - gasp - tuition.

I actually made quite a bit working during the Christmas season last year. Those weeks were my biggest paychecks of the year. I only worked 5-close Black Friday and by then it was mostly dead. The day after Christmas was actually worse. A LOT worse. We were there for two hours doing recovery, and I know it’s probably worse at other places.

Twisted is definitely right though, it’s not for everyone! Don’t forget a lot of stores have extended hours during Christmas season. We were open until midnight some of the time. Who wants to shop at a department store, during the week, during a recession, at midnight? NO ONE! Hours can vary though. Sometimes hours will be extended to ten, eleven, or midnight like we were sometimes. You might also find yourself waking up at 6 or 7 in the morning to go work retail all day.

Working over the holidays essentially ruined Christmas for me, but if you need the money you can learn to deal with it and just be happy your working.

There are also movie theaters and restaurants.

I absolutely disagree…I worked 2 jobs in retail last year so I know what I’m talking about, and I made a good chunk of change. Sorry if the only money I get is from working because mommy and daddy won’t give me any. Plus retail is easy! Yeah, it can get extremely stressful at times, but you need almost no knowledge to be able to do the job. And at Best Buy, you get paid really well! I got hired at 17 with only a month of experience in retail with a starting pay of $8.50/hour.

“SDRL, hate to burst your bubble, but the amount of money one makes from a typical “winter holiday job” is simply not worth the wasted time/effort.”

I made over $3,000 last year making minimum wage, I don’t know what you’re talking about. That’d pay my meal plan for next year. That’s a big deal. And I didn’t even really have to do much, none of my shifts were more than 6 hours and most were only 3 or 4. (Except that time they accidentally scheduled me for 11 straight hours and forgot to give me my break, but that’s another story…)

I highly recommend working in a mall. I only worked for the day by day calendar co. but many of the stores in the mall had employee discounts for mall employees in general, so I saved a LOT on my christmas shopping.

I tend to forget the sheer number of extremely well-off CC students. I just wish they could be extremely well-off and reasonable at the same time. In that sense, I don’t mind having been raised in a low-income family.
