As the title suggests, I just received my decision today. However, the problem is that my true goal is to get into the School of Management for accounting.

I emailed them two weeks prior my decision to change my status as "undecided" to "accounting" but they didn't do it and therefore I was accepted as "undecided". An internal transfer into SOM is extremely difficult, infact I've heard that they wouldn't even look at your application unless you were admitted with an intent for accounting.

If I decide to go to Binghamton for Spring 2012 I would need to take Calculus (I heard calc is extremely hard at Bing), Stat, and Micro Econ. Or I can choose not to go to Binghamton and stay another dreadful semester at St. John's University. (I am really unhappy with my situation and also I would really like to dorm)

My current GPA's are 2.60, 3.60, and Expecting a 3.96-4.0 (my midterm grade report, requested by Binghamton was a 4.0). I've already registered for classes next semester (Calc included) and I am expecting nothing less than a 3.75 for the spring semester.

If I were to go to Binghamton and heaven forbid I do poorly, I would NOT be able to transfer into SOM, and I'd be stuck in Harpur taking general ed courses.

If I stay in St. John's I would more than likely keep the upward trend in GPA (Estimated- 2.60, 3.60, 3.96 or 4.0, 3.8) I'll make sure to do alot of EC's and make myself more attracted to other schools.

So, I ask you. What would you do in my situation? Stay at St. John's and maintain a high GPA and open more doors for my accounting career, or go to Binghamton and try to get into the school of management? (which I should mention is excellent in accounting)

As always, thank you for reading and any advice you may give!

First you have to trust your ability to do well whereever you end up with.
Then the next prioroity should be which give you better chance in securing a job in accounting
I pick Good GPA at Bing (evenif cannot get into SOM)
Then good GPA in SJ over poor GPA at Bing
Again just my 2 cents

Shsurprise, yes Binghamton is a fine institution. However, what if I do poorly at Bing and I’m unable to transfer into the school of management? I want to major in accounting and that is not an option in Harpur. Thank you for your input.

I’m transferring to binghamton for both prestige, and for its spectacular accounting dept.
I’ve already called them and they said they cannot re-evaluate my application, as I’m already accepted. This is absurd because I’ve e-mailed them two weeks prior stating I would like to change my status as undecided to accounting.

I’m afraid I might have to stay in SJ. But I REALLY would not like to do this. The tuition price is insanely high, and going to a SUNY would save me a good chunk of money.

My friend is actually taking a leave from St. John’s because the tuition is just too much (FA included).

Don’t be so afraid about doing terrible at Bing, and if anything, that should give you more motivation to do well enough to transfer to SOM. It’s rare, but still possible.

And you clearly know how much more you could save if you just went to Bing. Isn’t that another reason to attend?
If I were you, I’d definitely not waste another semester at St. John’s. Unless your Pharm, no other major/degree is as worth it.

the accounting dept at bing is really not much different then the accounting dept at baruch, for instance.

as long as you maintain a solid gpa you’ll get interviews at all the big 4s. i’d stay at st johns for 1 more semester and transfer to baruch in the summer. you’ll also have more opportunities for internships if you’re in the city as opposed to middle of nowhere new york.

sjmoon- I am motivated but this would be my first time dorming and adjusting to the lifestyle might not be an easy transition for me (or maybe it will who knows). That might also affect my academic performance. If I do poorly, I’d be stuck at Harpur.
Thank you very much for the motivation, as well as the advice.

GWAlum- I would really like to dorm. Financially, Baruch seems to be the best choice primarily due to the fact that I’d receive TAP + free tuition. So I’m literally being paid to go to school. But I emphasize strongly on dorming. Thank you.

hmm…You did mention that binghamton is cheaper than St. Johns right? Just go to Bing now and get your grades up and try your best to transfer to SOM. If it is not possible and you can’t keep up with the competition, then just transfer to Baruch for accounting. Either way, you will save money and get to experiment your lifestyle at Binghamton.
-First year student (but a soph) at Baruch trying to transfer to Bing SOM for Fall '12

nycdave21 - That is a excellent idea… I cannot believe I didn’t think about that. Baruch is a little too close to home for my liking though. But I will keep that in the back of my mind. Do you have any other suggestions? That idea is great! But the idea of transferring twice makes me uneasy :/
