Government Major

I’ll be going to Bowdoin next year. I know that the government major is one of most popular majors at Bowdoin. Does it have the reputation of being one of the most difficult majors? I know that’s the case at many other similar schools. Does it seem to have good professors? Does the fact that so many people major in government increase the average class size to the point where it seems over-crowded? Any government majors out there?
Thanks.

I don't think the gov major has a reputation of being one of the most difficult. (Though I am a Computer Science/Bio major with a math minor, so it's not from the horse's mouth). The gov classes I have taken have been interesting, and I have enjoyed the professors.

Because of the small class caps anyway, I don't think the classes are overcrowded, though they're certainly larger than the upper level Comp Sci classes I've taken.

I know a bunch of gov majors--the intro classes are all big, but there's not a whole lot you can do about that. As far as I understand it, the upper level classes aren't overcrowded, but it is hard to get the classes you want because the classes are all capped at a certain size. My roommate is a gov minor and when she didn't get into the class she wanted this semester (we're sophomores, so no priority yet) another class was added during Phase II of registration, so it seems that there are enough classes to go around, but as a freshman or sophomore you might not get your first choices.

how about the science majors?
how is the difficulty of chem/bio majors?

At Colby, the Government Major has the second lowest average GPA on campus, if that helps at all.

Congrats on Bowdoin!

Thanks guys- I'll probably go in leaning in the gov. direction, but who knows what will happen through the four years. I guess at Bates, where my sister goes, Poli Sci is regarded as the most difficult major offered (but I guess it's hard to say that, for me, computer science would be hard, but for others gov. would be).
Just out of curiosity, are there any departments at Bowdoin that seem esepcially good, but just aren't talked about much? I know the gov. department got a big award a few years ago (I guess they were named the best college gov. program in the world: http://www.bowdoin.edu/news/archives/1bowdoincampus/001355.shtml). Any departments come to mind?

Difficulty of Science > Biology is a lot of courses, and Chemistry can have tough courses which knock people off that track (I know ex-chem majors who hated P chem). Also, a lot of pre-meds are bio majors, which has even more requirements which makes things difficult

Good Departments>I think our Econ department has gotten some honors... Computer Science is relatively strong especially given its size (strong areas include theory, AI, and robotics).

In general Bowdoin is most known for the following departments:
-Biology
-Chemistry
-Economics
-English
-Government and Legal Studies
-Mathematics

Not so highly ranked departments include:
-Art History
-Physics
-Philosophy
-Music
