Assignment : Do society's rules limit our decisions such that our choices are not freely made ?

My essay -
The rules by which a society lives can seem convoluted and restricting, such that many feel that the freedom which people have a right to, is more limiting than freeing .However , in the dangerous society we live in,such rules are necessary. But to think that the rules restrict the choices a person has is wrong. In such circumstances, strong hearted and brave people rise up and protest in such a way that they ultimately change the rules of their society . Evidence of this is seen in the recent events concerning gay marriage . and in the rise of the music genre called heavy metal .
In the past decade ,the subject of homosexuality has been a highly controversial one, with many protests occurring all over the world for the rights of homosexuals to marry . If one considers the past five hundred years , there has been a lot of progress. Before , homosexuals who had the courage to admit to their sexual orientation, were condemned completely by society, and in many cases even killed .However, when they started fighting for their rights ,people had to ultimately accept that these people are in fact normal , and have the same rights to freedom as anyone else . Here,it is seen that by standing for their rights, homosexuals were able to change society's rules to accommodate their needs,as is seen in the legalization of gay marriage in many states in the U.S.
Society's rules have had an effect on music too . In the 1960's, in the wake of the conception of heavy metal, there existed many people who simply did not like it, and in turn condemned it . Fans of bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest were subjugated to criticism by others in society, who claimed that such music promoted violence and was unhealthy. However, these bands ignored such criticisms, and are still ,in fact, very popular among thousands of fans, who have ignored society's imprecations and continued to listen to what they wanted to .
Thus,it can be clearly seen that people who want to do something and do not care for society's judgement are ultimately recognised by society in such a way that their perceptions and outlooks are taken into account as well .From the examples of homosexuality and heavy metal , it is clearly seen that society's rules do not restrict our choices , as long as the peoples follow through regardless of other's opinions . This is possible because society does in fact consist of different people who have different interests and ideas
