Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame or power?

Unfortunately, conscience is never a more powerful motivator than fame, money or power because it is human nature to always want more. This is made apparent through examples such as Othello and the Enron Scandal.

As shown by the play Othello, an individual will do almost anything wether it be ethical or not to gain power. The character Iago, after not receiving a promotion, plotted a plan to make Cassio, the one who received a promotion, seem unworthy of the job. Iagos cunning actions were not those of an ethical man. Iago only had power in his eyes and nothing could stop him. He lied and manipulated people in order to achieve his goal. A man with a conscience would be unable to do such a thing. To be motivated, one must have incentives and neither conscience nor good faith is strong enough to convince someone to do a particular thing. However money, fame and power are coveted by everyone making them excellent motivators. Hence, Iago is definitely proof that our actions are solely motivated by things considered more powerful than conscience, things that are desired by all.

As demonstrated by the Enron Scandal of 2001, money is the most powerful motivator of them all. In 2001, the world watched as top executives of the Enron corporation, an energy firm, were sent to jail for fraud. These men were among the elites, the select few of this world who control a vast majority of the earths resources making them rich, famous and powerful. But that was not enough for these men. As human nature dictates, individual will always want more. In this case, these top executives, without any ethics, hid billions of dollars of debt for their own personal gain. The lifes of many investors were ruined because they had lost everything. Clearly conscience did not step in into the decision making process of these individuals. Thus, it is now clearer than ever that conscience cannot beat human nature because will people will always have the desire to gain more.

To conclude, after a careful analysis of Othello and the Enron Scandal, we can safely say that conscience is not enough to motivate human beings due to their innate desire for more.
