Is disagreement necessary to progress?

Everybody has different opinions and thoughts on various subjects. With the diverse range of ideas, there’s bound to be conflict at some point between others. Despite the downsides of a disagreement like a weakened bond or trust, there’s an opportunity for both sides of the argument to develop; mentally or physically. Rather than concluding a conflict in ideas as pure disappointment, we should look to use the conflict to a more beneficial aspect for us. The following reasons will explain how this is actually possible in our lives.

During my high school years, there was an individual project my teacher assigned to my class. Just like any other assignment, we had to submit our first draft beforehand for the teacher’s approval. Unfortunately, my idea, which I thought was the best, wasn’t satisfactory in the eyes of my teacher. Although I was disheartened by the fact that she disregarded my effort put into my proposition, I was determined to prove my capabilities by redoing the project from scratch. On the second attempt not only was I more cautious, I was more focused than ever due to the prior failure I had in making the teacher agree with my plan. Conclusively, I managed to complete a thoroughly planned out draft whilst developing mentally in terms of being patient and hardworking.

Similarly, disagreement leading to progress can be witnessed in the growth of South Korea ever since it’s civil war. In the simplest of words, the country was parted to the North and South due to the strong opposing ideas held by both parties. However, the split allowed the South to rapidly advance, both financially and technologically unlike the North. South Korea standing within the top 10 wealthy nations wouldn’t have been possible had they not disagreed with the North on their communistic views.

To sum up, rather than regarding conflict as a negative aspect, we must learn to explore all of the options and possibilities offered to us. Using the conflict and making it beneficial to the individual for personal progression would be the intelligent thing to do.
