The old saying "Be careful what you wish for," may be an appropriate warning.... Can success be disastrous? Plan and write an essay... /quote

Many times i have heard the phrase "be careful what you wish for." Success can be disastrous, as success can have many effects. The novel The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky demonstrate how success is not always good.

Peter Keating in The Fountainhead is quite the fatal character. He wishes to become one of the most successful and prominent architects of his day. He accepts an internship at an esteemed firm in New York City, but that is not enough, for he is not a senior partner. He bullies his way to the top of the firm, and even blackmails an elderly senior partner to his death. He also sacrifices his marriages to get what he wants. In the end, he is successful alright, but for a short period of time. The effects are disastrous because he brings ruin to the firm. Furthermore, he drives away his friends and family. In the end, he is alone. His strive for success ultimately brought his downfall. In a similar light, a character from Crime and Punishment displays how disastrous success can be.

As macabre as it sounds, Raskolnikov's murders of the landlady and her sister was success. He wanted the land lady dead, and achieved his goal. After killing the women, Raskolnikov had to conceal this secret. Doing so almost drove him crazier than he already was. He could not lead a normal life. He constantly had to avoid eye contact with his family and friends, even strangers while out in public. Eventually he is caught for the crimes, and sent to Siberia for his punishment. While he was successful, he did something illegal, and the results are naturally disastrous. In the end, he is only with his love, working in the bitter cold jail.

The quotation "be careful what you wish for" holds true. As seen in Peter Keating and Raskolnikov, success and its effects can be disastrous. In getting to success, one should analyze the potential ramifications of obtaining ones goals.
