Thanks so much for taking the time to grade!

Prompt:
The old saying, "be careful what you wish for," may be an appropriate warning. Theh drive to achieve a particular goal can dangerously narrow one's perspective and encourage the fantasy that success in one endeavor will solve all of life's difficulties. In fact, success can sometimes have unexpected consequences. Those who propel themselves toward the achievement of one goal often find that their lives are worse once "success" is achieved than they were before.

Assignment: Can success be disastrous?

Essay:
Sometimes, people will often focus so much on achieving success that they do not carefully plan out possible consequences that may arise. In these cases, success can often lead to disastrous effects that they never thought could happen. Seemingly successful achievements such as winning the lottery and creating antibiotics for malaria exemplify this idea.

In today's current times, winning the lottery may not always guarantee success in life and may in fact be disastrous. Recently iin the news, a man named Billie Harper filed for bankruptcy. However, in 1999 he won the California jackpot for a grand total of $43.6 million dollars. Unfortunately, during that time, he did not realize that he should have carefully planned out how to wisely spend his fortuitous earnings. He quit his job, donated munificently to charities of his choice, and helped out some of his friends and families with their debt. it took him several years, but before he knew it, he was left with a mere $400 in his bank account. Billie drank heavily and gambled away what little money he still had left. After finally succumbing to his debt, Billie filed for bankruptcy and is now currently homeless. He was lucky enough to win such a great amount of money, but this success backfired on him and he became much poorer than he was before. In his case, success was more disastrous than beneficial.

As in the case of the lottery winner, scientists throughout time have unknowingly created disastrous consequences in the "successful" work they believed they were doing. For example, a harmful diseasse in the past and the present known as malaria has contributed to the deaths of millions of people. Researches and scientists have recently created antibiotics and vaccines that have helped lower the death toll of malaria in hard-hit regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately, this has alos allowed malaria-causing bacteria to evolve over time. Several of these have become resistant to all vaccines and anti-bodies. Scientists who originally believed they were creating successful vaccinations did not forsee such a disastrous consequence, the creation of a super-virus capable of wiping out the entire human race.

Success, if not thoroughly planned, can often lead to disaster. In the future, society should learn from past side effects of success in order to better prepare for new consequences that may arise.
