Grades from 5 years ago

If I registered for classes at cc 5 years ago and then withdrew/failed from them all and went on hiatus til last semester, will it effect my gpa and my chance to transfer? Or have they "expired"?

Thanks so much for the help :)

Grades received at a cc never “expire” and are part of your permanent academic record for the rest of your life. They will be counted when calculating your GPA and you must send a transcript of those grades to any UC you apply to as a transfer student.

To rectify the F do I need to take it at the same CC I received it at?

no, once you retake and get a grade, go to the admissions office and petition to have that grade replace your old one on your transcript.

Grade replacement rules vary from college to college. Not all will allow you to simply retake the course and replace the grade. Some will allow a class to be retaken at a different campus, others will not. Some limit the number of units, some limit the number of semesters/quarters. Some will even average the two grades.

OP, you will need to check with the college that those failing grades occurred at about their academic forgiveness policy and grade replacement policy.

do courses you took at a CCC for high school credit (but are college courses) count towards your transfer GPA?

@lindseyyy: Were you a middle college student? I was :).

Okay, so here’s the deal:

If you took CCC courses 5 years ago and you failed them, you need to petition for Academic Renewal. AR policies vary by community college, but essentially you can get those grades out of your GPA…granted, they’ll still be visible on your transcript, BUT they will NOT be factored into your GPA.

I got 3 F’s my first semester of CCC, but after 2 years of 3.0+ work, I was able to get the F’s out of my GPA calculation when trying to transfer to the UC’s. My GPA when transferring went from what would have been like a 3.25 to a 3.75.

Another option is retaking the courses again. I don’t recommend this as much as I recommend Academic Renewal, but this could work as well. The UC’s take the -better- of the two grades and don’t average them out. All-in-all this takes some time to rectify due to having to retake classes, but in the end, it really is worth it.

The UC’s are vastly different from community college. I love it at Cal…seriously, all the work you do at CCC does amount to something. Own in CCC, do what you need to do to be resilient and make up those F’s (through AR or redoing them), and then you’ll be set. Best of luck!
