Groton, Lawrenceville, Loomis questions

I was accepted to Groton, Lawrenceville and Loomis Chaffee. Each offered a substantial financial award, although Groton's was the most by a lot. I am certain that I want to attend either Lawrenceville or Groton and we all decided that considering the difference in money, that Groton was an easy decision. Afterwards, Lawrenceville came back and offered more or less the same package, and now we are right back where we started. Does anyone have any advice on the pros and cons, since tuition is no longer an issue? In addition, I am a recruited athlete, but I'd rather not mention the sport, although at both schools this sport is highly regarded. Thanks to anyone for their help.

Congratulations! People have said it before and they’ll say it again - attend revisits if you can and go by your gut feeling. You’ll be the one spending 4 (or so) years of your life at one of these places.

I am a Lawrenceville student, so I obviously have some bias, but I also hold very high regards for Groton. One thing to consider is Lawrenceville is a much larger school than Groton, whatever you preference is. Groton, moreover, seems more like a pressure cooker for me, whereas Lawrenceville is a great balance between academic rigor and being laid back. I also don’t like the way Groton dorms are set up because it gives the students little privacy.

Thanks to both of you! I really do feel very lucky to have a chance at either school. So much so that I have probably confused myself, family and friends over the joys and possibilities of attending either one. It’s a wonderful problem, but still a problem. It is nice to hear from someone attending one of these schools, it helps to cut through some of the fog. I have spent a lot of time at both, and I have a number of friends at Lawrenceville that want me to go there. On the other hand, Groton has done so much for me up until now, and the admissions process seemed to be substantially more personal with constant contact. Worse, both coaches at the school have been awesome, kind and helpful to the extreme. There is no rest for the indecisive.

I don’t know much about Lawrenceville but Groton is much smaller. One of the things I like about Groton is that because of its size you can (and are encouraged to) become involved in other activities aside from your sport. I know some people say it is a pressure cooker, but the faculty are as supportive and engaged with you as the admissions office has been during this process. I have always found Groton students to among the most friendly too. Are you going back for revisits.

P.s. only the lower school dorms are “cubicles” and offer a little less privacy as one poster mentioned. 4th - 6th formers have regular rooms complete with a door!!

Thanks Ironmom1.

I would very much like to hear from anyone that has any inside information, or impressions of Groton or Lawrenceville. I know many students are in the same boat, but with the deadline approaching it feels like being out in the sea in a canoe.

You are not going to find anybody who has attended both, which is why your query says, “G. or L.”. But, you will attend both revisits (hopefully) and have already “spent a lot of time at both”.
As seductive as it may seem that somebody out there (here!) can deliver the magic answer that you seek . . . it probably can’t happen that way.
You should do the apples to apples comparisons. What did the teachers and kids in the classes seem like to you? What was the conversation like, even the body language, at those lunch tables. Listen, without saying too much. Notice how the lunch is set up in the first place, and which appeals to you more. (Informal cafeteria style, teacher at assigned tables, etc.) Make sure you get taken back to the dorm again, and see if you can get a vibe. Same at some athletic contests; just sit in the stands and observe the crowds, maybe going on a regular none-revisit day if you are close enough to swing that, or are on vacation. Do shops on Main St. and a bus ride to Princeton seem better than the two miles to Ayer and a train ride to Boston?
There is no end to the input or information you can obtain on both schools, but, probably, you will finally decide what matters most and base your decision on what you’ve seen for yourself.

Hi, Fountain! I’m currently a Grottie but I actually have a friend who went to Lawrenceville for two years then transferred to Groton (for family reasons) and I know they enjoyed both schools. If you’d like to get in contact with them to ask specific questions feel free to PM me!

Sinenomine,

I’ll be at Groton on revisit day. I’m anxious to get back and see the school and the people I’ve meet when I was there. Apparently, I cannot send a private message. I don’t know if you’ll be at Groton on revisit day, but if you are, maybe I’ll see you. I’m definitely leaning towards your school…and maybe mine. Wish I could take you up on your offer.

Charger,

Can’t argue with anything you said. Good advice. I plan on visiting Groton the weekend before revisit day, and L’ville the day before revisit day. Thanks!
