Guaranteed Transfer

I just got a guaranteed transfer for next year to Cornell Human Ecology. First i got deferred, now this. What do i make of this. I got accepted to University of Virginia Echols Scholar, Univ of Rochester, New York Univ, Brandeis, Boston Univ Univ Professors Program, Univ of Maryland Honors.

you wern't accepted as a freshmen, but you wern't rejected from going to Cornell either. If you maintain a certain gpa at another school, Cornell will guarantee you a spot in the sophmore class. If Cornell is your dream school, I suggest attending the least expensive school you get into for one year and then take up Cornell's transfer offer. Dont be bummed!

what was the letter like?

I got a guaranteed transfer to ILR.
Heres the part about it:

"You should be receiving an official letter from the undergraduate college to which you applied. In this letter, you will learn that the college is offering you a guaranteed transfer option. Please read the letter carefully and contact the college directly if you have any questions. "

Anyone else get a guarenteed transfer? Is this better than being waitlisted, or worse? Has anyone here had expierence with a GT option?

it's better than a waitlist. Although waitlisted students have a chance to enter Cornell as freshmen, only a very very small percentage of students are actually admitted from the waitlist. The guaranteed transfer, though not an offer of freshmen admission, give you a spot in the sophmore class at Cornell. IMO, it's less risky than a waitlist and i'd take a GT over a waitlist any day. At least the GT is guaranteed.

The GT can be a great thing as frustrating as it is right now. I went to a state school and had a blast, practically for free, and now I am in the program I love at Cornell and graduating from an Ivy League. Cornell also makes it really easy to transfer- you will meet a ton of other transfers and there's a dorm just for transfers.

I still don't understand. Why would Cornell offer a better deal (GT) to a rejected candidate? Theoretically, a rejected candidate has worse stats than a waitlisted one. What's the point? How many people get this deal?

Those who are waitlisted are usually better candidates but if they don't get in, they still might get a GT. I was waitlisted and after I was not accepted for the second time.. they gave me a guaranteed transfer around the beginning of May. My personal spin on it is that it keeps intro level classes smaller and the freshman class small. When I transferred, I had all of those credits taken care of and I could concentrate on major classes and upper level courses that are small anyways and can handle more students.

I'm an intl who got this option? What are my prospects of aid with this? And can i transfer after sophomore year ?

how many kids who are on the waitlist actually get the guarenteed transfer option

u got into UVA Echols and not cornell, that is very odd

UVA out of state is extremely hard to get into

yes....well....im very happy about UVA Echols and im probably going there, I am upset about Cornell though. It was my dream skool and everyone on CC knows it. Look at my name!

congrats on UVA, its a phenomenal school

Hey Bklyn- you can still be Bklyn2Cornell with a slight detour via Charlottesville- Congratulations!

oh hi marny....nice to hear from u while im in a grieving period...........yes...im probably gonna end up at UVA echols...if i like it ill stay...if i dont, ill transfer guaranteed to Cornell.....uhhhhhh.......:(

Congratulations to all those who rec'd acceptances and GT options.

My daughter also rec'd a GT...in Texas, we call this being 'capped'. :-) She has a very strong application...only one flaw, weak grades (Bs) during her freshman year, so I can understand the desire on Cornell's part to see her do a year of college work elsewhere. But she's in at UNC-Chapel Hill, which was her #1 oos choice, and she's in her first choice major and college at UT-Austin.

So...she's just needs to figure whether she's gonna be a 'Heel or a 'Horn....and will pass on Cornell.

After receiving rejections to many of her reach schools, D today received GT to Cornell ILR (which was her 1st choice!). She is going to attend UC Davis for a year and then transfer. Finally some good news!!!

CornellAEM, did you express an interest in a guaranteed transfer or did it just show up on your doorstep? I was waitlisted and would much rather have a guaranteed transfer.

Good question- I did EVERYTHING I could to let Cornell know that I still wanted to be accepted off the waitlist. I made it clear that if I were accepted, I would positively attend. I sent in an extra recommendation and I sent an updated grade report. I am not sure if this made a difference, but I'm assuming it didn't hurt. After this I wasn't accepted, but I did receive a GT. At the time, I had no idea what it was but I'm very happy to have gotten it.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!
