Gw, Nyu, Bu, ...?

Hello friends.. I want to study International Affairs/Politics/Relations and Spanish next year. I've received all my acceptances and was wondering if any of you kids had an opinion on which of these options is the best (for what I want to study). And why.

So, I'm trying to decide between:

GWU Elliot + Honors program + Half-tuition scholarship

Boston U + Honors program + Half-tuition scholarship

NYU, no honors, no scholarship

Dickinson College + Honors + Half-tuition scholarship

And that's my order of preference right now.

Thanks <3

gwu, of course. elliot is fantastic. and i really like the gw campus. kinda wish i could have applied there. (didnt because it was too close to home.)

BU is out mostly because they don't have a strong International Affairs program. It is really between NYU and GW, but it seems like GW wants you more let alone has a much stronger International Affairs program and obviously you are in essentially the center of the world for the next four years. I mean the State Department, IMF, World Bank all border our campus.

My daughter chose GW over NYU because she felt NYU was too "big" and didn't have a consolidated "campus" like GWU does. Also, for political science, GW will have the opportunity for great internships. (If you were interested in business/finance, I would say NYU.)

seriously go to GW those other option for IR just plain suck .....I'll say this again for NYU's IR major you havea to apply to it at the end of your sophomore year- and only 30 people get accepted..plus their program along with BU's dosen't even hit the charts compared with GWU's

GW, unless you can afford NYU,then go there.

Thanks. This is basically what I've been thinking/hearing, but it's nice to see it reinforced. I'm visiting GW again on the 24th and then I'll make my final decision.

I've been hearing mixed things about BU's IR program... Anyone know how their business school compares to GW's? In case I want to get a dbl major in something that'll actually make me some money. ;)

hey - i made the same decision (GW vs. NYU) over the summer (I ended up applying to GW ED and was accepted to Elliot).

for me, after visiting both campuses and researching both schools (specifically the IR programs), there was no comparison - GW's campus, location (although I love New York), and resources are far superior. NYU's campus has much less of a 'collegiate' feel; although both schools are technically urban, GW is clearly distinguishable from the surrounding area whereas NYU is less so.

I'd take GW with no money over NYU with money - but that's just me. ;-)

buffit did you end up getting any aid?

I'd go with NYU definitely, if you can afford it...

GW is clearly the best for your major in terms of location (hands down)and quality and extensiveness of program. Eliot is just fabulous. That GW will be cheaper than NYU only makes it yet the more obvious choice. Boston is not as renown for your area nor does it have the opportunities for internships.
Dickinson is way too far from opportunities to intern.

remember that many schools have a semester in DC programs that could perhaps make up for this discrepancy

There is a HUGE difference though between one semester in Washington and living there year round.

No matter what school you attend, you can also do paid and unpaid internships in the District in the summer. Both GW and Georgetown (and prob. others) rent dorm rooms to other college students in the summer who are in town to work. However if you want AY multiple internships esp. in the IR/poli sci, a DC school can't be beat!

I agree with grapkoski and motherdear. There are so many opportunities year-round for students in DC. Think of the competition for a summer internship with applicants from all over the country vs. a fall or spring internship with applicants only from the immediate area. If your schedule allows, you could intern while taking a full load of classes.

The Elliott School is a great school. I've posted many-a-times about the strengths of the Elliott School. If you want a recap, message or email me.

even within dc area schools the internship hunt is very competitive and stressful- nycsenorita don't base your decision on internship possibilies( and internship you don't already have yet), because you might not even get an internship at all- and that would make your stay at GW a bitter one indeed----its not like GW guarantees an internship just because you go there...it still is vey competitive and perhaps against the odds

I must say that it is not against the odds. Internships are easier to get in DC for politics than it would be any where else. It's true, you shouldn't base your decision on internships you don't have it. There are resources on campus to help you find an internship. Armcp, have you even been through the internship search in DC? And by your other posts, I'm starting to assume that you are already bitter against GW.

Internships aren't all that difficult to get. My son's roommate interned with a Congressman in his freshman year. My son interned as a sophomore - wasn't that he couldn't get an internship before, but that he didn't try as a freshman. He had one as a junior, and will get another as a senior. It's really not that hard - we have no political or monetary connections of any kind.

The "best" ones - White House internships - may only go to IR or poli sci majors, but I'm not sure. My son is not majoring in either of those.

^^^^haha GWstudent- i will agree though that it is relatively easy to get an internship within your representative while going to school in dc---but the very prestigous internships---the ones that might be worth the 52k a year--are a crapshoot when it comes to actually getting one like hayden said-----and yes i am bitter against GW----because i love dc and the school's atmosphere/vibes-----but as far as what is most affordable i feel like a school picked me instead of me picking the school--which most likely would've been GW- i just can't stomach the ludicrous cost- i think it would be worse if i did go and perhaps didn't have such a great experience--talk about being bitter my parents would be too-----i just feel like i'm putting too much on line with GW

and yes i really do mean an internship within your representative ..lol
