GWU Transfer Thread 2010

Oh really? well dang I was never really serious about American, it was kind of a back up school since I did not know much about their business program. But now I think it may jump to the front of my list of the schools I have been accepted too.

Well there is a joke about people who get rejected from GU going to GWU instead, and GWU rejects going to AU but I think that more generally refers to people majoring in polisci/IR/government. For business, obviously GU is higher ranked higher than the other two but when it comes to gwu/au I think it isn’t as easy to discern which one is obviously better. They both have similar student orgs, similar programs where they take students to nyc to tour firms and meet with alumni and have plenty of panel speaker events on campus.

I’m surprised there aren’t a lot of au vs. gwu business threads on cc discussing this.

I don’t know how people select certain schools, but as to GW v. Georgetown, 2 clerks in our office have been accepted to both GW law & Georgetown law, and both are attending GW law. One associate was rejected at GW law, and is now attending Georgetown LLM. A college intern selected GW because Georgetown has no engineering school.

Yeah, I didn’t even apply to Georgetown because I missed the deadline, oh well haha. Yeah I think GW and AU are pretty comparable, which makes it difficult to choose who is “better” or better for you

im hoping we hear something this week!! I sent my application in early-mid march haha Almost a year since the last acceptances tomorrow? hopeful…

Thats true michaelungerr…almost a year…if I get a notice I will let you all know-after I’m through jumping around in excitement or crying curled in a ball, that is.

Is anyone here monitoring another message board like this on another site? I have been searching and haven’t found another forum of GWU transfers anywhere…it would be nice to have another pool of applicants to monitor for notification.

Just so you guys know, I spoke with them yesterday and they said not to expect anything until next wednesday after 5 pm. more waiting…

Are you kidding next Wednesday? *** that’s so long :(

NerdyGirl posted on page 4 that she talked to admissions as well. They said they were sending out notifications as they were made and that some had already been sent out…

I think it really depends on who you talk to in the admissions office. I am going to be optimistic and assess they are telling people to expect notification later rather than sooner, that way they don’t keep getting calls asking when applicants should expect decisions. If they tell you a week, you won’t call for another week…or at least you probably won’t have a good reason to. We all know that won’t stop us from coming up with some out of the blue reason of why we need to have an update… :D

Mine was I was afraid I’d miss out applying for the Yellow Ribbon Program if I didn’t know soon enough - its a first come first serve tuition benefit for veterans, and there are a limited number of slots available…

Next Wednesday? ugh! I guess another week at this point does not make a big difference.

I worry about the Yellow Ribbon as well! I’m applying to the Elliott School of International Affairs with a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies. I hope I get in! I don’t know why I wouldn’t… 4.0 current G.P.A., Presidents List for the third time… I had a letter of recommendation from an Ambassador and a killer essay. The wait is driving me nuts!

Great stats ShaunMartin!

I called the Veterans’ Affairs office when the 2010 YRP application was posted online - they said they expect there to be plenty slots in the YRP for all qualified students at GWU. Last year they had 80 extra slots.

How far along are you in your degree? Did you serve in Iraq or Afghanistan? Whats your MOS?

I have a 3.89 from a Community College - 93 quarter hours of pretty rigorous coursework while working full time. Language, math, science…no basketweaving  I have lots of unique work experience- intelligence analyst (35F) in the Army, and now I work as an intel analyst as a civilian in a Fusion Center. I had 3 letters of recommendation - one from an MI LTC, one from the Fusion Center Director, and one from my boss who is also a professor at a private university. Hopefully, they get to see me from a military, civilian, and educational perspective.

oy rattling on as if you all are the admissions committee and I’m trying to make my case. Blowing of steam…

Hey everyone! Argue your case to the admissions board on here! Give us all something else to think about!

Hey I just want to say thank you to all the vets applying to GW and all the vets period. Thank you for everything you all have done for us.

Thanks  Its been my pleasure. Just about everything I’ve given to the military has been given back to me two fold. Its been a great experience.

Thanks!

That’s what I’ve been hearing. Did you speak to Megan?

I have a little over 50+ credits. I’m going to a private university here in D.C.

I was in the Marines for eight years, got out in July 2009. I was infantry and served on a FAST team for three years before transferring over to the State Department, Diplomatic Security C.I. MOS 8151/8152 and 0331. Served numerous tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Was posted in the Maghreb, China and Israel. I worked out of those AOR’s frequently.

Intelligence Corps… huh… good stuff. Language capabilities? Feel free to email me privately on here. Do you work in or around D.C.?

rcwhite, Thank you for your kind words.

wow kitnkat03 and shaunmartin that’s intense, it takes a lot of guts to be in the military period, but especially at a time like this. If you both don’t get accepted GW is nuts.

Here’s to hoping NerdyGirl has relatives on the admissions board ;)

I would imagine there are lots of vets applying to GWU, though. With GWU’s background in politics and international affairs, it has to be attractive and logical. Add the yellow ribbon program on top of that, which is makes a $40k tuition free, you can be sure the school will bring in even more veteran applicants…

Plus, ShaunMartin’s background sounds way more extensive, and his background and experience directly correlate with his intended major - mine don’t.

sighdoubt… **what a morose companion!

anyone knows when decisions will be sent?

We are mixed on that topic - one admissions contact said decisions were being sent as they were made, and that some were sent out already (as of last week). Another said not to expect notification until May 19th after 5 pm…Last year CC applicants were notified beginning on May 13th.

@Vet gwu applicants - Make sure to look into the new GI bill for financial support as well. I worked on promoting it at my school while student body president due to having an air force base down the street. We were able to make sure all of the returning vets could transition into school easily with the financial assistance of the new bill.
