To prevent this from becoming an affirmative action flame thread (which frankly seems like the destiny of almost all CC threads) you can read up about this on your own.

To those who fear Asians are at a disadvantage:

The only girl in my high school class to make it to Harvard was Asian. Many others applied (people who I thought stood a much better chance than this girl), but she beat the odds nonetheless.

And her SAT score was barely over 2000. She ranked within the top 10 of our class (out of a class of roughly 250). I believe that her activities (she ran a number of clubs related to the classics) and her essay may have made the difference in her application.

I haven’t spoken to this girl since our high school graduation, but I believe that she is thriving at Harvard (more so than me, at any rate).

Nothing required although, knowing Harvard applicants, most will see the optional essay as a required one. Anyway, Harvard’s optional overlaps nicely with Yale’s required.

if you don’t mind saying, what school in the OC do you attend?

and silverturtle: You’re correct; nothing supplemental is required. Interviews at most schools are also “optional” though, but most serious applicants decide to do them.

I just wanted to wish everyone luck, and hope I’ll be seeing a couple of you next year in my class!

I think that the best piece of advice I received during the application process is “expect the unexpected”. My first choice was Princeton (H was nowhere near the top) and I never expected to be taking a year off before college. And yet, here we are! With me z-listed, taking a year off, and going to Harvard, I could have never predicted this was where I would end up. Talking to some of my other friends who have ended up at Harvard, my experience is not unique.

I submitted the commonapp last week. Figured i was sending it in to yale, so might as well send it to harvard too. Have to work on the supplement now.
