has anyone transfered from Cali to Baruch?

Math/Econ is a specific major at both UCLA and UCSD.

NYU is 30k a year, Baruch is 11k out of state and like 5k in state. Federal/State grants will not cover 30k, so it will be loans and so forth for NYU... where as in Baruch it would be just FEderal/State grants *(state after one year) .

i am in the same boat as you. it's a somewhat similar situation with yours, but the thing is baruch is very good for the money. only 11k a year for out of state and after a year, i'm pretty sure you can declare ny residency and qualify for in-state tuition. i'm considering other colleges that will cost from 25-40k and i'll most likely have to take out loans for all of that.

the only reason why i'm kind of worried about is the housing issue because they don't offer university-wide housing, which means i will have to get my own apartment and work full time to pay for it because my parents don't have the money to pay for my housing and i wouldn't want them to anyways.

you are considered a resident after 1 year, you can always room with somoene and they have services to help you look for housing

Since your in jersey cant you attempt to find a roomate and a job in NYC now... and sort of move there and get yourself used to the area and have housing and work establisehd and then start school.

I guess for me, the good thing is that i alreayd have a place and basic shelter and food and other needs met. I will have to work and so forth... but thats really not aas diffcult as doing it alone.

yeahhh, if i do end up attending baruch next fall, i'll most likely move to nyc over the summer and get situated. hope all goes well with you malishka and good luck with everything!

Hey, just curious what you decided to do. I am in the same boat (econ, management science at UCSD vs. a real business school with business-type majors). I was looking at NYU, but Baruch seems like a hidden gem. I am older, so the party lifestyle isn't really something I am looking for - but it would be nice to meet some people that share the same interests as me.

Anyway, I am in at UCSD or SDSU, and may even consider USD.

Hey,

i declined my admission to UCSD for the spring because well i do intent to move. I did apply to baruch but i havent recieved a responce yet. I applied to hunter and brooklyn as well .... their application was really easy, no essays.

I looked at other schools in NYC .. like Pace, NYU... blah blah... everything is so expensive, i decided baruch is really the best bet. However if i dont get in, it will be funny ...

baruch is a commuter school, so there isnt any partying, i guess people just go there to study, which is fine by me as i will have to work probably.

I am also waiting for the fall decision on UCLA, UCB, UCSB, and UCSD... at UCSD i got in for spring.

IF i get into LA or UCB i might go there ..... only reason is because they ARE the top public schools in the nation.

Right, but what do you actually want to do? For me, I want to get into business/accounting/information-systems... So, going to UCSD wasn't really a good fit. I tried to convince myself to do their Econ/Management-Science major, but only because of the school's better ranking. Half the people I know tell me to go to a school based on rank, others tell me to go to a school where you will do what you want to do.

What is your end objective?

i would like to go to a top ranked business school... like Stern or something , but no $.

well i want to go to grad school, thats why i wasnt really that worried about getting a good undergrad school, because my goal wasnt a job... but thinking realisticlly, i will have to be able to get a dam good job in order to support myself once i graduate, so most likely i will do a double major in baruch if i get in, Accounting/Finance, minor in Math.
Even though UCSD would give really good prep for grad school, but not for employment. .. atleast in my opinion.

Interesting, I just noticed that NYU is not listed on the AACSB list of Schools Accredited in Accounting, but Baruch is.
Both schools, however, are listed on list of Schools Accredited in Business
.

I too am planning a major in accounting size=1, so, this is a +1 for Baruch. (though, I don't know how important it is to be accredited by the AACSB. I read in the Hobsons MBA guide, that it is important, though I doubt anyone would turn down a degree from NYU ;).)

i dont know anything about being acccredited and so forth, i just picked the cheapest business school in the city. lol

anyhow, this seems like an intresting program and its open to transfers <a href="http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/programs/undergrad/5yr_programs/procedures.html%5B/url%5D">http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/programs/undergrad/5yr_programs/procedures.html</a></p>

Malishka,
Brooklyn should be a lock for your gpa, and Hunter not much of a problem either. only thing with Baruch is they get a lot of applicants, especially business, so you may have some competition.

If accepted to Hunter or Rutgers (& depending on UCs), I will be living in brooklyn, unfortunately it never crossed my mind to apply to that campus, sigh. hope you keep the thread updated on your final decision. good luck!

i have a friend who went to brooklyn, from what i understand, thats not a place you want to be... its not a good school

Non of the cunys are that great, but if you have to pic a cuny baruch and hunter are the ones to go with... brooklyn and the rest are very distant choices.

Hopefully me leaving baruch will help your chances :)

It's not that bad here, education is ok. Honestly, it doesn't compare to my HS at all (IB was definately more intense and actually rewarding than this), but most people like it here.

what is your major, why dont you like it, and why are you leaving? and where are you going?

Read my post up in the thread.
We don't declare majors untill we have a certain number of credits (I think 60 or 70), but I will be majoring in economics. Accounting is very popular here though.

I'm applying to UChicago, UPenn, Northwestern, and NYU. I'm not sure if I will be able to go even if I get in though (it's hard when your an intl. student not getting any aid :( )

malishka if you're very broke right now, you can always come to cooper union. that's where all the poor students get together to get an education.

@Malishka31, thanks for that link, those programs look pretty interesting, I will definitely check them out.

@all, its too bad hearing that CUNY system isn't all that - and it's also a little disheartening hearing jacknjill is leaving because he (she?) is not happy there.

Are SUNY schools better than CUNY?

You should know that a big reason why I'm not happy here is because it was never my first choice. Actually, it was my last resort safety. I came here planning on transfering so that probably affected my thoughts on Baruch. I know people who are happy and like it a lot, so it's not that bad. It all depends on your expectations and aims.

I would suggest Cooper Union too, but it's extremely comptetitive.

I don't know about SUNY vs CUNY. It would be a great generalizatoin if someone said one was better than the other because each has schools that are better than each other. Ranking wise, I think SUNY is higher up (I don't think CUNY is even there), but I think Baruch is a better choice for business because it is mainly a business school and being in NYC helps.

In California, there are two major universities as well... the UC system and the CSU system. It is generally accepted that the UC system is a "better" group of schools. I thought maybe there would be some similar generalization that could be made. Not necessarily comparing CUNY/SUNY directly to UC/CSU, but rather CUNY to SUNY in rank... but it's good to know there really isn't that type of comparison.

Thanks+
