Right now, the waiver page says the deadline has already past.

The deadline hasn’t passed for Fall 2009 semester, your link is referring to the Spring 2009 deadline. You will get a health insurance waiver form at orientation - it was either at the financial aid session or health center session that they passed it out - and it will be available online later this summer.

You will pay the “Health Center Fee” of $220 each semester even if you are able to waive health insurance - all students must pay that fee. The Student Health insurance if you are unable to waive it was $324 Fall semester and $611 Spring semester. (The Spring semester is more because it extends through the following summer.)

So it is definitely worth it to see if you are eligible to waive the health insurance for a savings of $935 per year.

The deadline last year was the first week of September.

Yea, the deadline is after the semester starts and you can find the form on-line here http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/Health_Center/docs/09-10.waiver.form.pdf

You can find out the requirements for waiver here:

It’s important to examine your policy & also the one available at USC to be sure you have the coverage you think you do. A friend’s D had Kaiser but was badly injured at her U (not USC) & was given emergency treatment that cost LOTS of money (think tens of thousands of dollars or more) that was not coverred by her Kaiser policy & she had waived her student insurance so they had to pay much more than they ever recovered by the waiver.

That said, we have excellent insurance that provides good coverage for our kids even at USC. We have gotten waivers for our kids at the Us they’ve attended and saved the $. We will probably be purchasing the insurance next year for S because once he turns 22, he will be too old and no longer covered by the family policy. :(

Very helpful. Thanks for finding the waiver online.

More info–spoke with the insurance folks at Anthem & USC today. There are actually 2 different policies–one for kids who attend USC & another for kids who are students but doing a term away from campus. The rate is slightly higher for the latter group but doesn’t require that the USC student health center is the base for all referrals and visits.
Either policy does allow the student to see a doc when & where the student is away from LA for summer or Christmas break, subject to the deductible & co-payments. It’s said to be a pretty good policy, as long as the student remains in school with at least 6 credits.
A problem arises for kids who have to leave school (e.g. due to illness) & thus lose their insurance coverage.

Please note that you will need to re-apply for the waiver every year you are at USC. I guess that makes sense since insurance can change but it is a bit of a pain.

Yes, at least they allow you to apply for up to one year at a time intead of each semester!
