For the love of christ. Help.

Hi, paigeb,

Some of my thoughts:

1) Are you taking the most rigorous classes offered in your school. Does your school offer most APs for seniors? You appear to have only one AP class as of Junior year and that might work against you if other Juniors in your school take more APs (if available).

2) Your unweighted GPA appears to be average for CAS students (however, the rigor of your classes may have to be factored in). What is your weighted GPA? You should definitely work hard on raising your GPA for the Junior year, generally the most important year as colleges like to see progress throughout High School and these will be the most up to date grades for them until the quarter or mid-year grades Senior Year, which some say NYU may or may not consider. And depending on whether you apply ED or RD.

3) You have participated in a number of ECs. I am not sure if you have any leadership roles in them? Also, do you have any awards in the French contest or art show? You have a number of community service hours. I recommend you apply for the Presidential Gold Level Volunteer Service Award (since you have the minimum 400 hours for this award, you just need someone to sign off on the hours and sponsor you).

4) You seem to be a very hardworking individual. This needs to be highlighted, especially if you do not have any leadership roles. Of course, it would be best if you can focus on something Junior year and put yourself in a leadership role in an area of interest or commitment. Also, perhaps you can focus your essay on your service orientation and what drives you in this respect, if leadership is not your strong suit.

5) NYU Middle 50% of first year students have SAT scores between 1830 to 2140 (according to College Board). You lean towards the higher end of the range in the SAT. You can choose to try the SAT I again (if you think you can improve the scores). Or you can try the ACTs which some score better on (27-31 being the scores obtained by the Middle 50% of first year students at NYU). This is so you can show strength in this area and maybe offset a weaker part of your profile, say a less rigorous curriculum than your peers in the same school or fewer leadership roles, etc.

6) Of course, write a strong essay that is edited and reviewed by others who are experienced. AND, finally get yourself the strongest, most unequivocally supportive letters of recommendation possible.

GL to you!

By the way, no need to provide SAT Subject scores if you provide the SAT I scores OR ACT scores with Writing (OR 3 AP scores, which would not apply in your case, unless you are self-studying for AP exams).

Also, a major achievement like winning a national competition, publishing in a national or international journal, or a major scientific discovery, etc. will exempt you either from one AP exam or one SAT Subject Test.
