I consistently score 28-29 on math tests, and I really need a 31 or 32. I would consider myself to be pretty good at math, but I find some of the questions on the math portion incredible difficult. I guess what I need to know is how do I improve? I evaluate my tests and I just don't really know what to study. I've looked at some spark notes stuff online, but I really didn't get much out of it. I tend to miss 7-9 on the last 20 questions, and maybe 1-4 on the first 40. If I could get the last 20 down to say, 5 questions, id be in business. Help!!!'

Here is a foolproof way to increase your score:

1: For each of the five topics identify the level you are stuck at.
2: For each topic practice problems at that level, and slowly move up level by level.
3: Try to solve each problem in more than one way - focus on practicing techniques as opposed to solving specific problems.
4: Mark off questions you get wrong and reattempt them about once a week until you can get each problem right on your own. Your score does not go up when you get problems right - it only goes up when you learn from your mistakes!

Now identifying the levels in ACT math is not quite as clear cut as it is for the SAT, but here is a place to start:

Level 1: questions 1-12
Level 2: questons 13-24
Level 3: questions 25-36
Level 4: questions 37-48
Level 5: questions 49-60

This is certainly not 100% accurate since ACT problems do fluctuate a bit between easy and difficult, but it is good enough to start you off practicing the correct level of problem.

And here are the 5 topics I’m referring to:

Number Theory
Algebra and functions
Geometry
Probability, Statistics and Data Analysis
Trigonometry

Best of luck!
