Hey UCSD people
i need help for a friend who will be applying to colleges during Fall 2009.
He wants to apply as a CompSci major , and wants to know how his SATs should be to stand a chance.

from wat he told me is that
his gpa(w)= 4.15
SAT - 2070
SAT II - 790 math ii, 800 chem, 800 chinese
AP : chem, calc ab, bio, ush - all 5s

don't know much about EC except that he is in all- state orchestra, and did the NYLF in UCLA this past summer

Too shaky to give a definite answer, the cutoff points could have been increased this year or not. But I think he has a solid shot against the other candidates.

See if you can find out his ECs and awards. If he has a lot of that, then he stands a good chance to get in. If he doesnt have a lot of that stuff, he should try to get his SAT as high as possible. He should aim around a 2150 though since academic points make up the majority of the points. If he can do that, with the other academics and the ECs you listed, he should be a lock to get in

This is a common misconception that more is better. It is better to focus on 1-2 ECs and excel in those to show that you can put your efforts into a club and make a difference in it. Handling multiple ECs just show you know how to juggle your time and that your diligent. College do not really look for that. They look for dedication and the ability to change or improve on something to benefit the EC/Club as a whole or just start your own nonprofit organization, which almost guarantees some applause from the Admission Officers.

Christian, keep in mind that I said the word “Awards” as well.

With the point breakdown, if the person has multiple awards, they are granted 300 points right there. That is what I meant by if they have a lot.

But as for the misconception, I agree with you that duration does matter.

But with the point system, it doesnt matter as much. When I spoke to an admissions officer when I was a winter admit about my point breakdown to see if there was an error, the lady I spoke to told me that when they look at the ECs, they not only look at duration, but also the number of ECs as well. Because I focused on a few ECs with duration, I didnt receive the full points (I got most, but not all). And had I had 2 more ECs listed on my application, I would have received 100 more points which would have safely put me as a fall admit to begin with.

Also does it matter wat order he picked the 6 colleges like instead of picking Revelle as #1 , he picked ERC or 6th college as #1 ? thanks again UCSD people :)
