My FRIEND IS VERY WORRIED!

His GPA is a 4.4 weighted out of 6.0 which is good with test scores of 1850 SAT and 30 ACT. Those are solid numbers, but he does not have any ECs besides NHS. For one year, he joined the school astronomy club but didn't do much there, he basically spends his time playing Halo.

Now he is going and joining clubs, but all of the clubs have deadlines to get membership so he is screwed...he's trying to get volunteer hours at the last minute but will that help him much? He says he might lie about Astronomy club and say that he was in it for all 4 years, can he do that? I say it doesn't matter since he didn't do anything in it anyways but he says something is better than nothing.

He wants to get into a top 100 USNews College(U Michigan is his dream school), what colleges can he get into?

Is he a Michigan resident?

he lives in texas

Ah...well, I imagine he's in the top 10% of his class, and doesn't U Texas guarantee admission to top 10%?

U Texas is a great school (Top 100), and cheaper for your friend than Michigan.

the thing is...I know he's not in top 10%, he's close, I know that, like 65/600

Top 100 schools? He could get into tons. Top 50, a few. Top 30 will be tough.

What is he interested in?

He's got an excellent ACT score. If he writes a great essay, he'll have a good chance. Also, could he not improve his GPA a bit to push him into the Top 10%?

The flagship universities usually don't care the much about ECs.

Has he had any employment during his 4 years? That counts as an extra curricular activity. Does he play any instruments like guitar or piano with lessons? That counts too. Perhaps he takes care of a younger sibling afterschool??? What other hobbies besides Halo does he do?

Anyway, it is never too late. He should volunteer. So basically he could just have astronomy club, NHS, and volunteer work. That's good enough!

Even if he isn't top 10%, he stands a good chance at UT Austin. I imagine that they'd offer him Summer Admission or perhaps CAP if he doesn't get in for the Fall.
