Help! How can I get to the NY Port Authority?

Can anyone tell me how I can get to the New York Port Authority from JFK airport? I have to take a bus from NY to Ithaca and I have no clue where this "Port Authority" is situated. Is there public transportation that can get me there or I should take a cab?

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is located in Manhattan at 8th Avenue and 42nd Street. This link will give you information about the Air Train which will take you to Jamaica Station where you can transfer to either the subway or the Long Island Rail Road to take you into Manhattan: <a href="http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/%5B/url%5D">http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/</a></p>

I would recommend you take the E train at Jamaica Station to the 42nd Street (location of the Port Authority Bus Terminal)

i recommend you take a cab because it'll be a hassle taking all you bags (im assuming you'll have more than one) on the train.

The air train to Jamaica and E Train to Port Authority isn't too bad. It's cheap - $5.00 airtrain and then $2.00 for subway- But if you have alot of luggage it's going to be a real pain in the butt.
I work in Jamaica and I am at the air train terminal very often as it connects with subway and LIRR.

The air train transfer can be a bit confusing as there are hardly any signs- no one to give info- BUT it really isn't that complicated. MOST New Yorkers are really friendly and helpful in our own gruff way -- so just look helpless and ask someone. From the air train- find the elevator that will take you to the subway- you don't want the LIRR (Long Island Railroad)

The E train will take about 40 minutes from Jamaica to Port Authority-

Honestly- a cab may be a heck of alot easier - but it's gonna cost alot more. I would think there is some bus that would take you from JFK to Port Authority- but I didn't see any listed on the PA website.
I am going to play the overprotective mom and do some research for you- if I get any more info, i'll post back.

OK did a google search. check out <a href="http://www.nyairportservice.com%5B/url%5D">www.nyairportservice.com</a> It looks legit. Bus service from JFK to Port Authority- $15.00 takes 1 1/4 hours (not bad)- even driving can take over 45 minutes. and frequent service. Looks to be a heck of alot easier than Airtrain/subway.
If you do not have much luggage, the subway is not a bad way to go- but I have a feeling you are going to have more than a backpack with you. Also- you still have a 5 hour bus ride from Port Authority to Ithaca- so save your energy.

I'll assume you are taking Shortlines/Coach bus as it goes right to campus. Greyhound goes to Ithaca too- but does not stop right on Cornell campus.

Good luck- take some books- take some candy- you got a long day of travelling ahead of you.
good luck marny

A cab isn't that expensive: <a href="http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml</a></p>

It's 45 dollars + tolls.

Are you taking the 5:40am NY Trailway bus? I just picked up my ticket today.

I suggest the cab. And you're coming from Bucharest, Romania? :-o

Take a cab, don't bother with the trains.

I wouldn't take the trains because it would be a pain with luggages. The bus isn't too bad. It's direct and cheap. If you take a cab, the cost should be fixed, not metered.

Take the JFK bus to Port Authority. It starts right across from the Arrivals gate. Once at the Port..., take the lift in the front Hall to the 3rd floor and confirm from the 'Shortline Bus counter' the departure timings. Shortline bus schedules are also available on coachusa.com.

Does anyone know the maximum amount of bags/luggage that are allowed on the Shortline bus? Because I was planning on bring two big duffle bags to put under the bus and one bookbag to carry on. Thanks.

Cornellstudent09: You will be fine with your two big duffle bags because the maximum is two and no one checks the carry-ons!
