Getting from Ithaca to NYC

Is i relatively easy to get from Cornell to NYC? In general, how is the transportation from Ithaca to other places in NY because I heard Ithaca is a farm town.

It's not that difficult to get to it from the rest of the state. I don't know much about NYC specifically, but I know that it's not that far a drive from the appropriate exit on I-81. other people probably have better time estimates but I'd say like a half hourish? definitely less than an hour, but it's not like it's right around the corner either. You don't have to go on windy, forgotten roads or anything...there are rather straightforward county routes and such that get you pretty much to Ithaca.

faustarp: What are you smoking? A half hour from Ithaca to NYC? It takes 4+ hours minimum(with no traffic) to get from Ithaca to NYC.

yeah...Ithaca shuttle says approx. five hours from ithaca to nyc.

And not to steal your thread, but does anybody know a shuttle directly from JFK, newark, la guardia airport to cornell, instead of taking a shuttle to nyc port authority and then another shuttle to ithaca? Thanks!!

best route from nyc:

GW -> 80 -> 380 to scranton -> 81 -> exit 8 to 79

password- look into "Port Authority". Thats the place where "Coach bus" goes between Cornell (North Campus and Schwarz center) and NYC. So...look at some way to get from the airport to Port Authority.

hahah. thanks. i already found that, but I was hoping there would be some way to just go directy from the airport to ithaca instead of going through port authority. thanks though =]]

I think faustarp's refrence to half an hour means the travel time from Cornell's campus to I-81, I came up from central Pennsylvania a couple months ago and it took about 30 minutes from 81 to Cornell

Do you think over four years at Cornell you go to NYC atleast once?

CMB720...what about taking 17 to 81. Would that be faster?

of course...there are countess of opportunities there for fun with friends..

It's really likely. Chances are, you'll be friends with someone from NYC or around the area. For the shorter breaks, like fall break and Thanksgiving, lots of people who can't go back home end up staying with those friends who live in the NYC area. Plus, you can always make a trip down to the city on a weekend.

"I heard Ithaca is a farm town."

Glad to see your schedule is sooo busy that 4-5 minutes of research on the town that you could be spending 4 years of your life in is just out of the question.

justamom: depends where you are coming from, north of the bronx (i.e. westchester, rockland) you might as well just take 17 because you are already north.

if you are coming from long island or NYC, take the cross bronx the the GW to 80, it is much faster.

yeah, my original post up there was the time from 81 to the Cornell campus. sorry for the confusion.

Thanks, we are coming from LI. I have only gone the 17 route, but will try the other way my next time up. I'm just apprehensive because the cross bronx is always such a nightmare!

so....apparently no direct shuttle from jfk/neward/laguardia airports to ithaca huh? it sounds liek such a hassle to go through port authority, then to ithaca. oh well =]

password: It seems kind of pointless to fly into new-york-metropolitan-area airports(JFK/newark/laguardia). Your best two bets are probably to either fly to Ithaca directly, or to Syracuse, which is only an hour or so away.

unless you have never seen NYC.

NYC airports don't count as seeing NYC. It'll be $45 one way from JFK to get into Manhattan.
