My GPA is quite bad, My rank is horrible and my PSAT score is 183. I am a junior in high school, trying to get into UT austin or TAMU!

Is it possible for me to get into those colleges? If I get a really good SAT and ACT score. I started doing Debate and other clubs/competitions! I qualified for State for BPA! I really need to get into those colleges! Please help! Tell me what I can do to get in! I am a junior in high school, in the 2nd semester.

What is your GPA and rank?

Are you instate?

You may have to go to one of the other UT’s and then transfer.

There are other residential Texas schools including West Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, and UT-Dallas if you want the “college experience” but can’t get into UT or Texas A&M. Should you want to go out of state, most of the state flagships surrounding Texas have much lower admission requirements, and consequently attract huge numbers of UT/ A&M rejects.

Go to a community college, do well there (obviously much better than you did in high school), and then transfer to UT Austin or Texas A&M.

You are a day late and a dollar short. Start making plan B. You still have lots of options if you do well in college. Start practicing now, find out what it is you need to do to become a better student.

It is awfully tempting to say that nobody needs to go to one of these two (fine) schools, but I have often been surprised by the exceptional circumstances of posters on these boards, so I’ll leave it for you to consider…

You don’t say just how terrible your rank is, but you can get into A&M with 25% rank and 1300 SAT (CR+M, min. 600 in each), so that might be possible for you. Otherwise, study ‘professionally’ for the SAT, a 183 PSAT puts you in reach of a 2000 SAT which would likely make you a viable candidate for any of the less-popular majors.

Since UT and TAMU admit mostly based on rank, 411/559 means you can’t get into these schools right away. What you can do is get into a branch campus and transfer, or get into another UT then transfer, or go to a community college that has an articulation agreement and transfer.
You’ll have to work much more seriously than in high school to have a shot, though.

Doesn’t look good because admission to these schools is so much based on class rank.

But not going to UT and TAMU isn’t the end of the world. Pick another college. It sounds like your interest in doing well has just started. You may just be hitting your stride once you get to college. Who knows what you will be capable of!

Rookie123, I was pretty much last on my highschools rank and graduated with a ~2.2 gpa. I am finishing up CC now with a 4.0 and hopefully transferring to UT-Austin or A&M for petroleum engineering. Do not be discouraged by your current circumstances because with a CC you have a fighting chance.

I had a friend last year in the top 9% with a 30 ACT who got rejected from UT. Texas A&M isn’t as difficult to get into, but I doubt you’d be able to pull your rank up enough in one semester (even with straight A+s) to be have a decent chance. Your best bet is going to be a transfer from a CC or another UT school (note that UT Dallas is a high reach with your stats, as well).

Hey, guys. Thanks for the replies. I already got into UTD, and I’m looking to get in to the CAP program for UT. Any chances of me getting in?
